Let me add that there's good reason for the closure.
When I was young and stupid I ignored the closed road sign at night (because the CHP leaves at night). Went up to the observatory, had some fun in the snow... Then when I was driving down I hit a long patch of black ice and almost went off a cliff. Keep in mind I was only going 5mph at that specific moment so I would have probably just jumped from the car, but I had absolutely no steering, no brakes, NADA, going sideways towards a cliff in slow motion. I can't imagine what would have happened if I was going faster.
Lucky for me I caught a patch of traction right before my car went off the said cliff and was able to stop a few feet before going completely off. Def almost shat myself that time, and was probably the scariest motoring moment of my life. Probably because I could see it all happening so slowly but I couldn't do **** about it.
Black ice sucks.

If you think Hammy is too windy then you've never driven over the top to Mines. Mines makes it all worth it. Hammy is an test of driving technique for sure. I have trouble with a few of the corners there because I have issue heal toeing and it's a must to nail some of those super tight up hill corks. And if you're not disciplined with your brakes... well... smoke.
