Snitch worse than Murder?

And neighbors knew it. But no one told police for nearly an hour. If neighbors had spoken up sooner, said one woman who lives nearby, some of those lives might have been saved. But in East Oakland, lamented the woman, Elaine, who refused to give her last name, that just doesn’t happen.

“I’ve been crying all day. It makes you feel bad,” she said. “But you just don’t want to be a snitch. The word, ‘snitch,’ it’s almost worse than murderer.”
I remember back in middle school and high school people clowned on each other for being a "snitch" and currently when things happen people don't like to speak up and take responsibility. In Oakland, I guess snitch is a guaranteed death sentence? People are afraid of snitching because of their lives? Maybe someone might retaliate? Street smarts? I think this happens all the time.

Salinas PD don't get a lot of info they need about gang incidents because people are afraid to "snitch."

If everyone would "snitch" on these worthless individuals, they could be wiped out rather quickly.

Anyone who does not come forward with information like that, should be charged with conspiracy and aiding and abedding a felon. Put enough "no snitch" people in jail with HUGE repentances (we are talking 20 to life here) and people will start to come forward.

My mom and dad were talking yesterday about how back in the day it was taboo no matter how hardened the criminal to shoot cops. Just an unspoken rule.

Todays criminals are just that careless and the value of life has just completely illuded these individuals. Its sick.

Also the media choosing yesterday to revisit the bart shooting was ignorant and unsensitive.

As far as snitches go the cats gonna get caught call me a snitch I dont give a **** I would give all the info I could. People **** me off sometimes.

Adults that still play the "snitch" game should be kicked in the nuts and thrown into the sun. Gang orders or not, growup goddamit.

Being afraid of being labeled a "snitch" is worse than murder.

You have to admit that there is a huge crisis considering snitches and jail time. I agree that not saying something is volunteering to not save someone's life. When looking at the perspective of jail time, there are huge amounts of problems with the system. First, there are too many people in our prisons. Second, it is costing the state too much money (key word here) to keep them all. They are in fact planning to release thousands of inmates soon for minor offenses. Too many inmates, too much money to feed them properly, more money for guards/wardens/officers. Like many other ideas that have to do with money (such as health care, you live longer if you have more money) the state isn't going to cover everything, let alone people who do not come up with information. Third, of course is the legal department and the court houses prosecuting non-snitchers. That in a sense would be a huge hassle to even start to think about.

Justice is Justice, but it seems like everything resides over the underlying issue, money. If someone snitches and they want 100% protection from retaliation that just wouldn't seem plausible in an economy (and our state) that is already suffering pay cuts/unemployment/under employment.

Wow too much information, I think/Know that nobody here on i-club would be that stupid not to "Snitch" when its something so important. You probably wouldnt "Snitch" on a guy who takes steals an Apple from a fruit stand, but would it that guy Shot the fruit stand owner and then takes the apple...common sense, its just that some ''stupid, retarted, use less, peices of crap" are what they say "scared" to me its a bunch of BS and should be burned ALIVE like those people in that video where they supposibly practiced witchcraft...burn baby burn!!!!

There are a lot of values from back in the day that'd we'd be a lot better of if we still had.

there is a difference between telling your parents your older brother ate a cookie and telling the police department that so and so shot someone. big difference.

There is a big difference, in one, your parents will get mad at your brother. In the other, it is possible have yourself shot or have a tag on your head when a family member (who apparently think the killer is not a beast) finds out who the person is. It varies in area, thought process (how you grew up) and a bunch of other factors. Being that we own subaru's and have time to access a computer to post responses. I dont think you guys, including me, have an idea of what it is to live in a ghetto of East Oakland and probably have not seen or experienced what happens when someone snitches.

The bigger idea is that something needs to be done to show these poor people or sub cities a better way to deal with these ideas. Instead, since our economy is so broke, I doubt anyone has the intentions of going into East Oakland and revamping their school systems and parenting.

You think you are smarter than you are. That is an observation.

An assumption is thinking you know where people are from based on the cars they drive.

By your explanation it seems that you believe that it is o.k. to not do the right thing because there might be consequences for doing it.

agree with you 100%....
My brought up wasnt so great growing up, I once thought that you dont snitch, Instead you handle you bizz...thats me at a young age..

Now (grown and more mature) i think diffrently, after being around the block a few time, wisdom starts to kick in. You start to realize that if you dont say nothing, these instances will continue to occur. Salinas for example..too caught up on the "Well if i open my mouth i might get caught up and blasted"
Wrong, there are sulutions for everything. There are tip lines where you dont even have to leave your name. If we all just shut up then nothing will ever get fixed....
