Smog / AP Flash Question
Depends on how smart the smog tech is and what the turbo looks like. Vf39 on a wrx?probably not going to get noticed. Rotated 30r, fail. There is huge debate over the whole front mount thing. Somewhere in the smog laws it states that you can indeed change the intercooler on a car that came with one. I don't know if that has changed but do you really want to do with the hassle? I know I wouldn't.
Now Joe SMOG shop has to make a call based on what they know. They aren't lawyers, so you get 2 kinds of shops... The ones that say "yep it has cats, passes and that intake has a CARB EO, here's your slip" .... and the ones that say "I see a mod, I'm no lawyer and don't care if you have a CARB EO, I'm not risking my STAR rating on you, go somewhere else."

Technically rotated turbos and intercoolers are legal if you maintain stock boost control and use a CARB EO# intake. You'll never find such a setup, and obviously someone doing that won't be running stock boost either, but the way the car is setup, emissions from a FMIC and GT35r are not extraordinarily different from stock if you keep the stock ECU. Which is why you hear stories of refs who don't care about turbos or intercoolers.

Its all about money in the end. Many heavily modded cars run cleaner than stock cars but that doesn't fit the agenda. Money in the form of fines is why smog shops don't use common sense and go strictly for the by the book and I don't blame them at all, we are the ones that get screwed in the end.

you guys got to understand smog shop is taking lots of risk trying to be somewhat " mod friendly " smog
they can be fined $5000 up to $20,000 for a simple mistake on their end, with that amount of risk just to make $30-$40 of course they are going to be ****
honestly if one complain about smog or smog shop being strict toward them, shouldnt be modding his or her car in the first place

one last question if anyone knows. i never got my renewal notice from dmv because i moved and they stopped fwding my mail. i went down to pay the reg fees at dmv and they reminded me that i needed to smog it. since i don't have the renewal notice it doesn't state if i have to go to a test-only, regular, star, etc.
when i went to the dmv to pay the fee i thought that the paperwork they gave me would say, but all it states is "smog inspection / certification required." last time around it was test-only. should i assume that it's the same this year?
