Smog / AP Flash Question
It's that biyearly time again. Last time my setup was a simple stage two with the stock td04. I left the stage 2 map on if I recall correctly and passed no problem. I've since added a vf43, walbro fp, 06 blue injectors, and an sti top mount.
My question is do I have to reflash to another map if I put my stock downpipe back on? Is that considered "safe" with my current mods? Or will it pass with its current tune, which is a pretty conservative one.

It really depends on what (if any) monitors were turned off with the tune. You can always call your tuner and ask, or use a scan tool to check your own. You can only have 1 "non ready" monitor to pass the OBDII scan.
It should pass fine if you threw on your stock DP and flashed back. Put some miles on it for the monitors to complete their cycle. Just drive real easy and stay out of boost.

If you're tuned for your mods there's really only 2 things that will make you fail the sniffer:
- no cats (DURR)
- big cams
Everything else will pass if your ECU is setup for them (injectors, fuel pump, turbo, etc...)
And rarely do tuners do much of anything at the load cells that they test for smog, so if you actively try to stay out of boost, just swap DPs and go get smogged. Visual is the main reason why people fail.

I had a secondary air system 'not ready' and my smog guy said he would not move on.
who knows tho. maybe it was because he wanted to get star certified and that monitor 'not ready' would mark as a point/ding to his record and would affect his future star status.
I've since fixed mine, but it was a pita to deal with to get a straight answer from anyone.
Are you a star test only?
also re: TMIC/FMIC failliing visual, i saw in another thread someone failed visual for their non-oe tmic cuz it lacked the carb numbers.

Depends on how smart the smog tech is and what the turbo looks like. Vf39 on a wrx?probably not going to get noticed. Rotated 30r, fail. There is huge debate over the whole front mount thing. Somewhere in the smog laws it states that you can indeed change the intercooler on a car that came with one. I don't know if that has changed but do you really want to do with the hassle? I know I wouldn't.
An Aftermarket TMIC will not cause you to fail visual, if the tech give you crap about it and says he wont pass you visually because of it, go to another shop that knows what they are doing. I speak from EXP here. Even when Reffed an aftermarket TMIC is ok. With regards to an aftermarket "stock" location turbo, if the tech is really good and in the know of aftermarket turbos or the turbo is all polished out attracting the techs eye then your chances of passing visual are less than if the turbo looks stock and like it belongs. I polished the cold side on my stock turbo and when i last went for a smog the tech noticed the shine and asked me about the turbo and spent more time looking to be sure it was stock than he did on my friend with a 20g stock location that was non polished. That then brought to his attention the aftermarket DP i have. Thankfully he was cool about the DP since its dual cats and i passed the sniffer.
