Small question about timing belt change.

So, my brother is currently changing his timing belt. It is a 2006 wrx.

He is lining up all the cam gear notches with the timing belt but, there is this yellow line on the cam gears. Does this line have any importance?

We are trying to figure out if this line was from a previous timing belt replacement (car is at 105k, so not likely) or that this mark was made at the factory. Trying to avoid bent valves here so, have any of you seen anything like this? Any input is greatly appreciated!

Can you elaborate a little more? Do these timing marks need to line up with the marks on the belt?
Thanks in advance.

Thank you, but that's actually the guide we have been going off of. These yellow marks don't show up anywhere else in that write up or in the author's videos.

Is that a paint mark on the gear? I'd just go off the hard line marks on the gears and the mark on the belt. Shouldn't be wrong. That thick yellow line isn't straight and seems out of place.

I am said brother doing the timing belt change. I've got the belt on perfect right now according to the factory notches on the gears, the notches on the timing belt cover, and then the lines on the belt. Everything is where is "should" be. The white paint marks on both top cam gears are tripping me out though.

Why are they there? They are both about 1.5 teeth to the left of the factory notches. If I line up the white paint marks then of course the bottom double notches won't be aligned "properly".

So should I just be ignoring these random paint marks or do they mean something important? Just trying to be cautious! Thanks for the help.
