Sigh. (Mid-tunnel breakdown.)

At 4 am I was coming back from SF on 24 east, heading thru the Caldecott tunnel, where all of a sudden I hear a loud *pop* and *fssssssssshhhhhhh*. I then immediately noticed loss of boost, then loss of throttle, then loss of, well, everything. Right in the middle of the f'ing tunnel with cars whizzing by me (and my friends) at 85 mph, while we tried pushing my poor car to Fish Ranch Rd. (if anybody knows where that is.)

To make a long story short, the CHP showed up, pushed my car even further off the freeway, gave me a sobriety test (which I passed), and then asked if I needed further assitance. I told them I'd call Subaru's Roadside Assistance, and they sent out a driver. During that time I inspected my car and noticed the hose leading from the IC to the turbo popped off. Couldn't get it back on (subsequently kind of mangling the hose.) Got my car towed to Diablo Subaru, and it's now sitting in the lot there.

Diablo's service department is closed for the weekend, so I think I'll be going back to see if I can fix it in the lot tomorrow when I wake up.

Anybody have any advice on how to get that godforsaken hose back on? The hose is *really* stiff and just does not want to pop back on. I think I might have to take off my IC to get to it.

Thanks for listening.

Happened to me too. Tried to do it without taking the IC off but no go. Best thing to do is jsut take the IC off and it will only take 5 minutes to put the hose back in

Didn't read the explanation, but usually I use something slimy (vaseline, assembly lube, that red grease, KY, butter, whatever) to help it slide on. The last time I installed them, my friend and I struggled with it for a good half hour with no luck. Finally we decided to try a hairdryer on it to get it hot and hopefully soften it. Once we tried that, it took about 5 minutes to get it back on.

What's up everybody,

Thanks to all the replies and offers of help. I was able to get the Y hose back onto the turbo inlet after I had the right tool (12 mm socket wrench) and some elbow grease. I removed the IC and it was pretty easy to get it back on. My question now is, how do I make sure this never happens again? I'm thinking of buying a set of Samco IC hoses.

Thanks again.

What a dick...the CHipy gave you a Field sobriety test? We're you even drinking, showing signs of intoxication? What an ***...
I guess in his world a reasonable person would have figured that anyone who breaks down in a tunnel before dawn must be drunk...lol.

I'd definitely suggest Samcos. I don't think intercooler hoses popping off is a very common problem, so I wouldn't really worry about it, but Samcos never hurt. They're not too terribly expensive either, so why not?

Well, I was at a party earlier that night, and I did drink, but I was completely ok to drive. I might've looked intoxicated only because it was 4 in the morning, my car broke down in the middle of a tunnel at a blind corner, and I was freezing cold trying to get that damn inlet hose clamped back on.

The CHP were pretty nice to me, a bit rude, but they were doing their job.

You don't ever want to break down or come to a stop in that tunnel. For those that are too young to remember, this account of the story I linked is less gruesome than the newspaper accounts of the day.

Same thing happened to me one night on 280S. From then on, I got in the habit of checking the intercooler hose fasteners each time I wash the car.

I drive those roads a few times every day, I am suprised I didnt see you. I would recomend if you can, NOT getting anything done at diablo subaru, I have had worst experiences possible at that place, they are extremely shady. Good luck with fixing the hoses, and Im sorry if I am adding to the whole ordeal.
