Shopping for a digital camera
i'm a nikon guy as well, but the canon SD line just kicks ****. there was sd1100 for 199 at office max. sorry, there was.
The Canon SD1100 IS. It's new, small, solid design, takes good pictures, good movie modes, wide angle, and image stabilization. Go with a Canon and you won't be disappointed.

What ever you do!!! do not buy a sony point and shoot ever!
3 dead in the last year with very careful handling.
Mine, my sister, and my fiance's all died. From the same issue too.. the lenses failed in some way that Sony said means the lenses had to be replaced (with the electronics they attach to inside the camera)
And so funny how they are all different models, and they all failed riiiiight after the warranty was up.. hmmm

Canon all the way - I would say for you, get the SD-1100. I have the SD-700IS which I chose specifically for the 4x optical zoom and such - it is awesome, but there are better features with the 3x cams of higher number - the SD-850 IS mentioned by Superglue is another cam I have experience with that is great. You can't go wrong with a Canon elph.

And thank you all for your help re: Canons!
^^seems like the only thing they do right now days are tv's, bluray players, and the ps3.
Also when I worked at compusa we saw more sony point n shoots come back than any other camera.

I'd look at the Canon SD950. Compared to the 1100 it has a larger sensor, larger pixels and more resolution (12mPix vs. 8). So in theory even at 100% resolution it should have slightly less noise. And scaled down to lower resolutions it should have even better (lower) noise. It also has a slightly wider zoom range. I got my wife the 900 (the previous non-IS model) about a year ago and I've been really impressed by the quality of images it produces.
