are services at dealerships worth it?
My friend who is in the repair and oil change business says that that is overly excessive.
I get all my cars and trucks done there and he charges only $16.99 for any of them. Now this is not my special price, he charges everyone the same price, and I have been going to him for over 16 years.
He also does an average of 20 to 30 changes a day-he has 6 bays and all kinds of custom wheels, air cond, and front end alignments.

I just had the 15k service done at the dealership. I told them when I went in that I didn't need the tires rotated or the oil changed but I wanted everything else done. They charge $49 for tire rotation, WTF? So I had all the inspection items done which are no charge and some sort of combustion chamber / injector cleaning done for $125. And some other stuff. It came out to around $200. But here's the messed up part: they changed my oil free of charge, but I had Mobil one synthetic in there and I'm sure they put dino terds in it. I don't think it's good to switch back and forth. The moral of the story is, dealers suck.

Ron Price recently fixed a broken **** in my car as well as did the cruise control recall work. When I picked up the car I didn't notice the two big stains on my hood. When I got home I noticed it on a walkaround inspection and washed it off immediately: no damage i could see. when Mrs. Price called me to see how the work done, and after another call back from Dwayne at Ron Price, I found out the roofers next door to the dealership spilled hot tar all over people's cars and that was hot tar on my hood!! They offered to wash the car for me but it was too little too late.
Watch out what happens at the dealership you never know what happens to your poor car when it sits in the lot even when it's not the dealer's fault.

I also let Carlson do service for my car. At the end of the service you should've gotten a sheet of paper with a list of standard items done for an xyz-mile service. I haven't had the 30k one yet, but for $400+, it must be quite a lengthy list, not just oil change and tire rotation.
I took me car to a jiffy lube, and had a bad experience with them. they overfilled the oil, and the oil was leaking everywhere. i'd say i trust dealer's work, and if you bring in your own oil, carlsen deducts the $9 for dino oil.

Hahha... when Carlsen was remodeling their service dept I think a monkey scratched my tailgate with one of those metal U-shaped 2x4x8s..... Carlsen was cool and paid to have it fixed though. It makes me want to avoid even "the best" dealerships when I can.
My experience so far..
I do all my own maintenance and have for years. I used to work in a shop in Belmont.. I had [dealership] do my first oil change and the 15k service to satisfy the warranty, but I have been doing my own (Mobil1) oil changes since 10k miles. My car has 27k miles now. I have found that yes, you save money doing the work yourself and (big item) you know it's done right, but.. Anything you have to have done on the car will become a chess game with them taking every chance the have to blame it on you. I have heard these horror stories before about dealership warranty service, and have had a few cars that were under warranty - the only one that has sucked so far is Subaru and this particular dealer.
My car does something with oil. I change my oil every 5k miles now that I am using Mobil1. At about 3k-4k I need to add around a qt. I have heard that newer cars use oil, and especially turbo cars. So I went to the dealer to see what's up. They told me things like: 'it's not normal for your car to use oil, and if it does there is a problem,' 'it's doing that because you are using 5w30 oil - you should switch to 10w30,' and a few other things. We scheduled a service and the results were "owner does oil change service, oil drain plug was loose, tightened plug, problem fixed" which really bummed me out. For one, this was about 2500 miles after an oil change, so if it was really loose - I prolly woulda seen a puddle (or at least a single frigging SPOT) where I park in my garage every night. Since I check my oil religiously at every fuel up - I prolly woulda noticed such oil usage. They were just putting it on record that - they are not responsible for anything and I am an idiot. This was my first 'wake-up call' as to WTF this warranty thing is really all about. What a total dissappointment.
So now, my car is undergoing an 'oil consumption test' at the same dealership. Even though for the first 25 thousand miles my car has driven it has used around 1qt of oil every 3-4k miles, according to them at 2500 miles into the test, it has not used ONE DROP. Ah-so.
I am torn. I feel like cashing in my 6yr/100k warranty for something actually worth something if this is any indication of the service I will recieve. Another item that is worth mentioning: I asked about a high-pitched squeal my turbo makes under boost occasionally - like it's done this maybe 4 times. They saw I had removed my intake resonator and attributed it to that. WTF?? I am almost afraid to find out what will happen if my tranny dies or something. Attribute it to my window tint?
This is BS, and this is my warranty and Subaru Service experience so far. So far all I have gotten out of this is: a lot of nasty looking reciepts, a bad attitude, lots of wasted time, and the marks from someone hitting my rear bumper with some other 4 wheeled contrivance.
I will look up MPJ for my 30k service. [Dealership] was going to do it as a finale to my oil consumption test, but if they really stand by my car not using a DROP of oil in 5k miles when it's done, I doubt I will feel happy about grabbing my ankles for the 30k service.
I just see it as a future problem if something else happens and I want Subaru to fix it under warranty. "Did you have the dealership do your 30k service? You didn't? Uh-oh that could be your problem."
All this crap makes me love my '95 Impreza even more. If it breaks - I KNOW where I stand with it..
