It seems as though there is an abundence of police officers pulling us over lately.

wtf COPS COPS COPS????
Why does it seem like every other WRX owner in the Bay Area are getting tickets for modified exhaust, tints, plates, anything the cops can write them up for. I don't about everyone else but this is starting to scare me. Some members on this board are transfering their heavily modded WRX's back to stock because of violations. Now I a bit hesitant about modifying my car. Soon I will be installing a fmic, bigger turbo, headers, injectors, gauges, and my suspension. But because of the chance of being pulled over and dealing with the law I don't know what to do. I already have a full turboback system with an up-pipe so that literally makes my car CATLESS. Not to mention I have the Blitz exhaust that many of you know is one of the loudeset exhaust in the market. I may just pass on my mods and buy a bike. I really dont know what to do. Just a confused SOB.... Well just want all the wrx owners out their with modified cars to be careful, and watch for po's!!!!

This is true. I also have noticed a lot of WRX's being pulled over and receiving tickets for whatever the cops can give 'em. It seems like we are being targeted unfairly. I, myself, feel like putting my car back to stock and just getting an Evo or STi. But I guess I'll wait it out for awhile and see what happens in the next few months...F the cops

Long, but...
The best piece of advice I can give people who want to avoid harrassment at the hands of the police/CHP, is to befriend one!
I have not gotten a ticket greater than a $10 proof of correction, since I put my friend's bus. card on the back of my DL, 3 years ago.
Check this out, I was really going 70mph!
https://www.i-club.com/forums/showth...ing#post182837
My friend is an officer with the San Leandro P.D., Emma and I used to go on group motorcycle rides with him, before we sold our bike.
I have known him for like 6yrs, but I asked him to let me use his card with his graces about 3 years ago.
Plus I used to own a business, a restaurant in Dublin (where many cops & FD hung out, incl. Ala. County investigators), and that makes a big difference with cops, since it's their duty to patrol & protect establishments. Plus my restaurant frequently was over-capacity, sold beer & wine, and had huge music shows, including hip-hop, and the cops loved the fact that they never got called out for a problem, knowing that I myself handled all the security (for 250+ppl sometimes). They reminded me of that several times.
I'm also on record for having chased down and caught 2 DUI & wreckless driving criminals (one of whom had also stolen the car!), and for catching a bank robber that made the mistake of running behind my restaurant, so the Dublin & Danville PD love me.

Now the farthest I will go as far as intake/engine/exhaust mods is:
>Currently have quiet Tanabe Super Racing Medallion catback
>I cut out intake snorkle, removed ram air under hood, installed blocking plug
>Installed an STi Airfilter
>Will install a gutted uppipe soon
>May do a COBB reflash in the future
But I will not and never will let a cop/chp look under my hood to check a thing, and by keeping the stock DP & MP (Quiet), I will continue to give them no reason to!

dood, the only stickers I have on my stock ride height Sedan, with only stock wing, no tint, and stock wheels, are:
2x small i-club.com on rear windows at bottom
1x Labusas.org on the very bottom of rear windshield, barely visible unless I'm parked.
all other stickers are on the underside of my trunklid....

I doubt that Subies are being targeted more than any other car. We've only been hearing about it because we're on a Subie board.
Frankly, this is just another vailed attempt by this money strapped state to generate more revenue.
What pisses me off is that all of these ticketing issues are blatently for money only. If this sudden clampdown on violations were for the "safety" of its citizens, it would make it more palatable. Sadly... it isn't.
*whoops.. topcover realizes he's standing on a soapbox*
Sorry about that.

Because there are laws on the books that cover these mods. A slammed WRX with 18's, big wing, and grapefruit-shooter exhaust that roars will turn heads and some of those looking will be law enforcement.
I've never been pulled over in my rex. My car has really dark tint and I have pulled alongside both police and CHP at stoplights but because it conforms to CA law (only back three windows have tint) I never get hassled. My exhaust is stock except for uppipe and is quiet. I routinely check all of my exterior lights for burnt out lamps and proper operation. I haven't had a moving violation in more than 14 years. Don't do anything to attract attention and a plain-jane car like mine will be left alone.

I agree. There is an obvious increase in the number of citations issued to modifed cars deemed out of compliance. I see Hondas pulled over a lot because there are a lot of them. These are the ones with, you guessed it, big wings and body kits and big exhausts.

Yes, I highly doubt Subies are being singled out. If you're rocking eye catching and/or illegal mods you're going to catch 5-0's eye. We only hear about it more because this site is a haven for Suby owners with eye catching and/or illegal mods.
I don't need more cowbell dammit!

I didnt harassed once when I was in California and I had deep front tint, a fairly loud exhauts (for an N/A car) and Colorado plates. I thought I would be a target.

You guys are right now that I think about it. Since this is a subie board, I hear a lot of people getting cited for whatever (imagine that...lol). But what I have noticed is that there have been a lot more police officers out on the prowl and the ones I see pulled over are mostly WRX's (by sheer luck or coincidence).

I think a lot more of the people on the board have been ticketed recently, which is certainly noticeable.
If they weren't before, why now?
With the exhaust law change, it looks like they are pulling more people over with that in mind.
They get to send you to the CA Referee instead of arguing with you about anything.
There is definitely more activity lately and probably more of crackdown on modified cars. It isn't just subies.
Many people at my work have gotten tickets, several with no mods, but wheels and exhaust.
Stay cool out there.
