Security cameras for home....

Anyone have any experience with this? Looking for a few channels and recording options. I don't want to spend a ton of money but I don't want a waste of money either.

Cameras MATTER. Don't skimp on the cameras. Test the system, know that it works and the quality is good. Not worth buying if you can't make out a lic plate or a face.

DVR portions are not as important, they work. Cameras have to be solid, most important part.

My dad and brother something from costco I think, works like ****. Can't cheap out on this.

So, big lens and big sensors= better, clearer video esp in dark, not well lit areas.

Quoted for truth (stole your line).

Coming from a police officer: Do not skimp on your cameras. I see so much security video with crappy image quality it makes me sick. Most of the box systems I look at are garbage. You can't even identify people you KNOW already on most of them from more than 5-10 feet away. No joke.

Imagine how frustrated you would be if someone vandalized your car for thousands of dollars in damage and all you can see on your video is "person I believe to be a male, wearing dark clothing."

95% of the crimes I see caught on video have a suspect wearing dark clothing (read black hooded sweatshirt) with the hood up. They also sometimes wear a hat with the bill low over their brow/eyes or just have the hood pulled tight so you barely see any face.

It is VERY hard to positively identify anyone in that kind of outfit with a GOOD camera system...even if you KNOW the person already.

I would consider a camera system a deterrent....and no more. In the wrong neighborhood, I would also consider it something else to steal off your home. We get a few theft of security camera reports as well. Consider that when mounting your system.

Heck, even with just a few signs posted up saying security cameras are watching can be enough to deter some people from committing the crime. Granted if they realize nothing is there then it won't matter anyways.

This logic sadly works. This is also the reason why almost half of all the cameras you see in stores are fake black plastic domes. They sell fancy/realistic looking fake plastic cameras for like $25 on Amazon.

One of the cheapest upgrades I'd recommend to someone is putting home alarm stickers on your windows and a little staked in sign in the front lawn lol. Hopefully the crooks just move on to something else. If they know who you are...like when your child's turd friend breaks in to steal his PS3...then that's another story (and happens more than you'd think).

From my experience with druggie criminals, the most likely ones to pull a B&E, it'll be someone that knows what you have in the house. They'll also know if your setup is just a deterrent or actual security. Hell, now everyone on i-club will know you have cameras, so the cat is out of the bag.

If people in the hood are breaking into your place cuz they hate you, then maybe the problem ain't them hoss...

PROTIP: Install dummy cameras in the open and that are easy to reach from the ground/with a ladder.
Then have your high end cameras located elsewhere...hidden.

Works every time.
