Get AT&T U-verse.
Dish is cool but it has it's issues. I HAVE to run dish because I'm out in BFE and can't get anything wire based. It says weather does not effect it but precipitation does.... what is Rain exactly?
Heavy rain, fog, snow, wind all effect your reception and some stations are just flat out shaky. If the satellites are more east coast or what not they tend to have issues and go out. If it's a lower quality channel. Etc. Hell I am having tons of reception issues right now. You have to have the dish realigned every now and again or call and have the satellites find it again... etc etc etc.
Go wire based.
Get U-verse. It's the newest and best right now and you can bundle it with your phone and internet and all that isht.

Anybody have satellite tv like Direct TV or Dish Network? What are the pro's of satellite over cable besides the larger channel selection? What are the con's?
Does satellite tv include regional sports programming like comcast sports bay area? Just mainly want to know if it will have a channel for Giants/Warriors/Sharks/A's/etc games.

I've stuck with Dish after trying all 3. Dish comes HIGHLY recommended by me.
What is it that you want the most? For it's the least compressed signal, best picture quality for the money.
Cable is the most compressed. Looks like ****. It's expensive as hell. It's easy to get though as cable lines are everywhere.
DirecTV is much less compressed. It's got a lot of channels, but nothing really stand out except for Sunday NFL Ticket... but if you want your local games and aren't looking to have EVERY NFL game, it's a HUGE waste. Not sure how many national broadcast channels it has in HD, should be a high amount.
Dish is the least compressed. both SD and HD look awesome. Their prices are VERY fair after promotional rates are over. The number of channels they have in HD are unreal. If i take out the $45 I pay for 6 Indian channels, I'm getting 200+ channels (half are HD) for about $70/mo. These include Comcast Sports Bay Area (in HD) and my locals. I have the SilverHD package with Locals and 4 Receivers. I have ViP211 Receivers. When I wanted to convert my main one into a DVR i just plugged in an external HD with USB and paid a 1 time $40 fee. Easy. I love it.
This over what? 30 cents per subscriber?! DirecTv is crazy.
DirecTV carriage dispute
On August 18, 2009, DirecTV informed its customers that it may drop the channel after August 31 if a new carriage agreement isn't made with Comcast. [24] Robert Mercer, director of public relations for DirecTV, said: "Versus' overall ratings are poor and have not increased nearly enough to justify what we're paying them, let alone the significant increase they're asking for. He added "It is a significant rate hike and the deal is discriminatory because Versus is not offering the same package options as other distributors." Versus responded in a statement released August 20 that said it has added "many marquee properties" and has become "the fastest-growing sports cable network in the country." [25] The price cable systems pay is reportedly 18 cents per subscriber. [26] The rate Versus is asking of DirecTV is unknown. DirecTV dropped the channel at midnight on September 1, replacing it with the message "Versus is no longer available on this channel. Comcast, which owns Versus, has forced us to take down the channel because we will not submit to their unfair and outrageous demands. For more information go to www.directv.com/versus." DirecTV said it already pays Versus more than any other independent distributor and that the 20% hike it is seeking "for what is basically a paid programming and infomercial channel with occasional sporting events of interest is simply piggish. Comcast has set a market with arms length negotiations with these other distributors and DirecTV expects equal treatment. But we want them to understand that we must hold the line on programming costs and protect them from unwarranted price increases, especially in this challenging economy."
Versus responded by saying "On behalf of millions of passionate sports fans, we are disappointed that DirecTV has chosen to remove Versus from its service and deny their subscribers access to our all-encompassing coverage of the sports they love. Since our last deal with DirecTV, Versus has added many marquee properties and has become one of the fastest-growing sports cable networks in the country. Versus offered DirecTV a fair and reasonable offer to carry the network at the market price. We hope DirecTV will make the right decision for their customers and put Versus back on the air."[27] The next day they said the dispute is about placement, not prices. "DirecTV wanted to take Versus away from 6 million subscribers who were receiving it for no additional cost. That was simply not acceptable for us. We hope to resolve things amicably, but that's a non-starter." Those increases aren't true," said Davis. "We're simply asking them to pay what the other providers are paying." He added "If the quote-unquote 'leader in sports' considers the Stanley Cup playoffs and Lance Armstrong's comeback as paid programming and infomercials, then I think the average fan knows they're not the real 'leader in sports.' That's an insult to all the fans of those sports." Versus reportedly charges 27 to 29 cents per subscriber. [28]
Versus launched a national newspaper ad on September 4 saying "Worthless: That's what DirecTV thinks of the sports you love". It then urges DirecTV customers to switch providers. [29]
DirecTV has set up a special email address for customers to voice their opinions on the matter at versus@directv.com.

Sadly, I go out and design their satellites and don't get any discount...go figure.
We just launched a satellite that's going to boost DishTVs capability, and have another one coming early next year and then two more in 2011 for them. Dish is definitely stepping up their game.

Any info you can provide?
I'm with comcast right now but I'm fed up with the service interruptions I have gotten since the federal mandate to go digital. Ordered the digital adapter box and my local channels are pixelated or cut off completely. Tired of having to call customer service to restore the picture. Plus the bill is way too expensive for the digital starter package. For the same price, satellite tv offers an extra 100 channels.
Thanks for the info. Mainly I was looking into price, value, local channels, and regional sports channels. I was interested in Dish till I found out they don't offer comcast sports bay area (or basically regional sports) in my area. I talked with a Direct Tv representative and they said they offered regional sports channels in my area.

Just one other thing to consider. I just switched from Direct TV to Uverse and I'm not happy about not being able to record to a dvd from the dvr. With Direct Tv it was never an issue. Uverse now scrambles the signal to where you can't record, BUT the real kicker is that it is not all shows or all the time. So I never know if I will be able to burn it to a disk or not. I called Uverse and got some lady reading from a chart or something and she told me there was no way to record any shows to disk. So after discussing it with her for ten minutes I gave up on her really knowing what is going on. Like I said before sometimes I can burn to disk and other times I can't. I'm seriously thinking about going back to Direct Tv if they ever get Versus back. I can't go back until the do, as I like hockey, Indycar racing and The Tour de France and some other shows on Versus.

Also, copy protection is not enforced by the provider it enforced by the content creator. That's why some work and others done. Looks like DirecTV isn't abiding by the wishes of the right holders, which is good for you (or was).
u may get it but I'm not in the same zip code as u. Same as with ATT U-Verse. I don't get it in my area/zip code.
edit: lol I went through the same page on Dish Network's website to check if they offer it and now they do...I must've did something wrong before.

You sure it wasn't for DSL?
