Hmm, that's a good questions, I wish I knew... I'm interested to see what suggestions are made. I'm craving some good sideways action myself.

choises are limited with snow still in the mountains

...as most of the valley is paved.
There are some interesting and fun short roads up north of Lincoln- look for Spencevill and Camp Far West roads up by the Spenceville Wildlife refuge.

But in a month or two the forest service roads in the Sierras will start opening up.
There are some real "thrill rides" out there!

maybe.....

My schedule is filling fast, but I expect to spend a couple of days in the next few months out scouting roads.

Let me know when you guys might be up for a drive and I'll either go along or point you to some places to look.

I have to write an all-day rally in the Sierras for the Porsche and BMW clubs for fall of '04, so I'll be needing to do a lot of mountain road exploring over the next 12 months or so.

"Gold Country" roughly refers to the area of the western Sierras from about Merced at the south end- north to Marysville or thereabouts.

There are thousands of miles of twisty roads out there, and quite a few of them unpaved, and there is still the chance that we'll run into snow closures at this time of year.

-but you don't know for sure 'till you get out there.

Anybody want to suggest a place or time to hook up on Sunday?

Maybe Placerville or Auburn- probably not earlier than 10 since I have to drive out from Berkeley......

Hmm, that might be a bit harder to find, it's been my experience that if a road is flat in California, they pave it- even if it goes nowhere and nobody drives on it.

Safe is good, but I've always found that to be more a function of speed and driver knowing his limits than the nature of the road.

[i]nothing on the mountain side, im still traumatized from an accident i had up in the mountains.
Ouch!, sorry to hear about that- I certainly wouldn't want to take anybody out for a drive and not have them come back in one piece, but at the same time, if you get thrown from a horse they say you have to get back on, ....hair of the dog that bit you .... all that stuff
