Just FYI, on all Subarus the spare should be used on the front wheels only. If you get a puncture in a rear tire, you are supposed to swap it with one of the fronts and put that front tire on the rear. The reason for this is that the front differential is an "open" differential and allows the left and right to spin at different speeds. This isn't as big of an issue when the rear differential is an "open" diff as well, but on all WRXs and up it's a LSD rear diff and attempts to spin the left and right wheels at the same speed.

Man...sorry to hear about this.
Does anyone know if the '05 and below WRXs' spares will fit over the 4pot calipers? I have an '02 bugeye with 4-pots in the front. If mine won't fit over the 4-pots, would the 2001 RS fit? (since their stock 16" fits over the 4-pots)

from what i understand, RS spare wheels will not clear 4 pots.

Seems to me that it should be covered under warrantee. You did nothing wrong. It's not your fault they engineered **** like that.
You did what you're suppose to do. I'd take it to the dealership IMMEDIATELY and have them pay for it.

I don't know about STi's but I remember when I bought my car, the sales person told me that if I got a flat, there's a fuse that needs to be taken out so that only it's only 2wd, didn't matter if it was front or rear, the computer will know once you start moving.
This was like 7 years ago when I bought my 03, so I'm not 100% on it, I've never had a flat so I never had to use a spare.

i believe that's only for automatics.

This is why I don't even bother keeping a spare, I'd rather just call a tow truck than risk a big drivetrain bill.
