Rusty crank pulley?

I was changing my timing belt this weekend and as I was removing the crank pulley I noticed it was extremely rusty. It seems that Subaru painted or poorly coated the mild steel pullies on my 03 WRX. A large portion of the paint/coating has blistered off and corrosion has developed on the raw steel.

Upon looking at the other pullies (AC and power steering) it seems like they are ALL starting to corrode. Just a heads up to people with older Subarus...even if you live in the temperate climate of the east bay...your pullies may be rusting away!

I replaced the crank pulley with a Perrin lightened piece, but I'm not sure what to do about the rest of them. I don't really want to replace them with the same low quality oem parts.

I don't think I can recall seeing a crank pulley on any make of car that didn't have rust on it.

Low quality is certainly not what I'd call it.

Well it does seem like a case of low quality in terms of the coating. Considering that I havn't had any major fluid leaks and I don't live near the ocean...the blistered coating is most likely due to temperature cycling. Hot - cold - hot - cold will cause the steel and coating to expand and contract independently eventually blistering the coating.

The low quality comes into play when considering that whatever coating Subaru's oem supplier used does not hold up under standard temperature conditions.

Its not that bad of a thing though really because it gave me justification to go out and buy the Perrin pulley!

I have!!!!!!! My aluminum unorthodox is all clean, and 7 years old

har har har I know what you meant though. There shouldn't be paint on a pulley surface anyway, and since the steel never has time to build up any oxidation rust aint no thang
