A robbery gone wrong, shoot out 20 feet from my house!!!
Last night my wife and I had friends visiting from LA and wanted to take them out somewhere nice for halloween, so we decided to take them to a really cool lounge/restaurant in Oakland (wait for the irony).
We head out at around 10:00pm or so, get home around 3am... As we're coming home to our complex we see a slew of cop cars surrounding the whole area... Not knowing what had gone on, I went upstairs and looked out the window. Police tape everywhere, and I could hear the cops talking from our upstairs bedroom, thats how close they were.
Fast forward to the next morning, I check the news and it turns out there was a friggin SHOOT OUT 20 feet from my house!!!
Two men attempted to rob a house (house behind us), but were met with an owner that had a gun. Shots were fired from both parties and unfortunately for the home owner, he was shot 6 times

The family was of Indian decent and they think it was random.
Irony? We went to OAKLAND and there was a shooting at my house!

FREMONT — A 21-year-old Fremont man is in stable condition after being shot six times early Sunday morning.
Police responded to the 20 block of West Pickering Ave. at 2:05 a.m. after a 911 call, officials said.
Officers found the victim, who was then transported to a hospital.
Police said two suspects entered the residence and demanded money from the occupants. The victim then armed himself with a gun and a gunfight ensued with one of the suspects.
Witnesses described the first suspect as a dark-skinned black man between 26 and 27 years old, over 6 feet tall, thinly built with an "unkempt half-inch afro-style haircut.''
He was last seen wearing an all black hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and carrying a dark, wood-handled gun in his waistband, according to police.
The second suspect is described as a light-skinned black man between 26 and 28 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, 220 to 230 pounds, with short, clean-cut hair. Police said he was last seen wearing a black T-shirt with baggy light-blue jeans.
Anyone with information can call the Fremont Police Department at 510-790-6800.

damn sorry to hear the bad news on your neighbors behalf. I hope he makes it through and makes a speedy recovery. I believe homeowners have the right to shoot someone that's trying to invade there house. These two men should be brought down to justice and hopefully get caught. I can't stand thieves. Arggh, makes me wanna get gun in the future just for protection. Stories like this is the reason why firearm should allowed. Good thing u guys weren't home when all this happened.

I'm pretty sure you can only "defend with leathal force" if they are threatening your life so if they didn't have a gun your neighbor would be in jail if the robbers were the ones who got shot 6 times.

Not totally true, just because they dont have a gun doesnt mean they can't threaten your life.

wow, thats some crazy news to hear. especially living so close too.
i too had an encounter like that with my neighbor right across the street. some broke into my neighbors house and robbed them while they were out on vacation. for those of you who know where i live, its a pretty quiet area and the people that enter my community are the ones who actually live here. i was thinking it was set up, but who knows.
point of it is, it hits really close to home since its literally right across the street. im sure you feel the same way Daniel.

With the state of the economy, sadly, there has been a ton of robberies around the Fremont/Union City area. I've had several friends who parents' or friend's home that were robbed.
Typically it was more of the empty house variety and not the home invasion. Some random person will come knocking at your door in the middle of the day. If no one is home, I'm guessing he goes back to the car, and rounds up his buddies to rob the house. If someone is home, they'll use some silly excuse like, oh, have you seen my dog, and then leave when you say no without telling you the description of the dog (happened at my fiancee's house).
All I can recommend if you're not home during the day is a good security system, or homeowner's insurance.

Thats the east bay, gotta love it..
funny a lot of people hate it for the same reason (strangely enough) others like to claim and love it.. GANGSTA STYLE VIOLENCE.. its only cool until you become a victim or are close to one who is.

Normally in order to use deadly force, the other person(s) need to have displayed opportunity, capability, and intent to threaten your life. However, complete strangers breaking into one's home should qualify as all 3 factors.
