I did my timing belt with Gates and Subaru parts and it cost me half that price.

Also, head gasket is $300?

Am I reading something wrong:
Cylinder head & valves, Head gasket
Forester, Impreza, w/o Turbo - 2.5l, 1999-08
ENGINE »Cylinder head & valves
Subaru › Impreza › 2004-2008
List Price : $49.95
Your Price : $36.56

The $300 is for a complete gasket kit not just head gaskets. It includes valve cover gaskets, cam seals, crank seal, BPV gasket, header gaskets, etc, etc.

And yep, you're right the Gates kit is about half the price for those parts and it is an option. The pricing I listed was for all OEM parts.

Thanks

Yep... again, there are many ways to do the same job and many parts that should be replaced but may not be replaced when getting it done "cheap". The problem with that is that you will eventually be spending more on labor to get those parts replaced in the future instead of just replacing them when everything is already apart. It's easy to save people money in the short term, what I try to do is save them money in the long term but not having to spend money on the same labor twice.

Rebuilt? I would think a new motor would cost upwards of 6k+ since the short block alone is 1500+ from Subaru. Then theres heads, gaskets, seals, lubricants etc etc oh and labor.

When it comes to something like that, I tend to choose only OEM parts. My other car is N/A and just had the timing belt done not too long ago and it cost about half what my WRX cost me to do. So I presume the job is slightly less expensive for that car, though more or less all of the gaskets and labor are very similar.

These guys rival LIC Motorsports for knowledge, experience and the fact that they know more about Subaru than Subaru knows about Subaru.
In addition, this included the machine shop labor, essentially a complete rebuild of the motor - definitely NOT taking any chances that they ever had to do this job again.
