Recommend me some beer!
So much to go from....
I'd say... try different types of beer.
Fat Tire
Gordon Bierch Hefenweizen
Corona
Sierra Nevada
New Castle
Guinness
Get a bunch of 6 packs and try 'em all.
Also try a bar with draft beer, it really is a different thing than bottled, and bottled is way different than canned.
Make sure to pour the beer in a class to drink. The actual aluminum whether feint or not can change the taste of the beer. Draft is best.
Last but not least, take some beer tours, you'll understand the process and the major difference of beer on tap vs the bottled beer.
The thing about beer is I enjoy trying new and different ones. So don't just sit on a certain one. I always explore and try the different seasonal ones, etc. It's much more exciting.

If you like strong IPA?
Drakes Denogginizer
Pliny The Elder
Frestone Double Jack
Bear Republic Racer 5
Lagunitas Maximus
DogFishHead 90 Minute Imperial IPA
all of them are pretty hoppy and strong. DFH comes in a 4 pack and if you drink all 4 of them you're ****ed for the night.
Or, man up and go somewhere and order a shot of Jameson and a PBR. That should be your first ever legal drink order.

You live right by one of my favorite brewers
Monterey - Marina English Ales Brewery
Monks Brown Ale is awesome - try and get it "on cask"

Before you start looking at brands of beer, I think should should narrow down what style you like and go from there. Ales, porters, stouts, IPA, etc. I'm personally a porter and stout guy. But since you are going out for your birthday, my recommendation is to drink whatever your friends put in front of you!

So... For beer recommendations, if you have not had much beer, definitely do not start with something hoppy. Even if you like hoppy beers and are going to try several, start with the least hoppy first.
For someone new to beer, it's pretty rare for someone to like a very hoppy ale as the first beer they have tried.
Also, buying 6-packs can get expensive, and have you end up with 5 beers that you don't want. If you go to Trader Joe's at all, they price beers by the bottle (even if you buy a sixxer) so you can get a great taste of a few decent beers. The one near me has 21st Amendment's brews, Lagunitas (you must try the IPA, but stay away from Hop Stoopid at least for a while - it's made with hop extract instead of hops and while I appreciate a hoppy beer, I did not like it at all. Tasted like chemicals to me, but I did try it bottled and never on tap). Pliny the Elder is a very good "fine" IPA, and you can get it on tap a few places around the Bay. Grab it if you see it, but it's not worth making any serious effort for it.
When taking beer advice from someone - NEVER under any circumstances, listen to someone who says ONE BEER is the best or anything like that. Best is different from favorite. There are a million different flavors of beer, and taste is very personal. Try them all! A great, wonderful starter beer is New Belgium's "Shift Pale Lager" - it's super good, more like a light ale, and still really tasty. Great place to start.
Mirror Pond is an excellent first "pale ale" experience, and Sierra Nevada Pale is good but better on tap (it's a different brew than the bottle).
Lastly, be careful with craft beer pouring. I have seen people make the mistake of trying to pour a single 22oz bottle of a craft beer into 3 glasses. The thing is, there is yeast at the bottom of the bottle, and while *some* beers are complimented by this, not all are, and it can lend an especially skunky bitter taste to the beer that may even put you off beer. As you tilt the bottle back to pour into each glass, it stirs up the yeast on the bottom.
Please note - all of the above just my opinion, it's worth what you paid for it, and it's definitely not worth getting anyone's panties bunched.
Enjoy the beer!

Go to harrys hoffbrau or smoke eaters, both have a crazy good beer selection and if your nice you can sample before you buy. Harrys is the best!

Just scanned this thread, sorry if these have been mentioned before.
California Craft Beer - Fremont
Been here a couple times, plenty-o-beers, roughly weekly rotating line up on beers on tap. Owner knows his stuff.
Jane's Beer Store - Mountain View
Only passed by, but looks good.
Either place will do you well in recomendations.
And word on casked Monks Brown Ale.

I have been on a brettanomyces kick lately. Although beers containing brettanomyces or Acetobacter might be a little much for a new beer drinker as those types of "wild" yeast make a VERY sour beer.
I would suggest drinking copious amounts of beer untilled you find one you like.
Sierra is usually a good place to start. Anything from lauginitis is good as well as Anderson valley. I
I was thinking of getting a baic brewery tour togeather in the spring.
