I got the same ticket, only mine was "Exhibition of speed", which is even worse... But anyway, you need to go to court and ask to speak to the DA. Explain to the DA why you were speeding, etc, etc... he then will tell the judge, and you'll get your fine/points reduced.

So, instead of 2 points, a misd., and about $600...
I got 1 point, and paid $100.

Seriously... talk to the DA.

just talked to my friend

plead guilty and paid 1300 and had a 1 month license suspension

like i said the insurance was the worst as a lot of insurance carriers won't cover if you ever had a suspended license

I got one of those before, for going 119mph down the I-5 right after the grapevine. I got a lawyer, fought it, lost and they suspended my license for 6months. Get a lawyer for sure though. My friend got a ticket for going around 110 up 580 once and fought it without a lawyer, ended up losing his license for 1 year.

i was in the same predicament last summer. same place (coalinga) hwy 5 and same speeding ticket (but slightly faster... 125 mph)

so here's the deal.

you'll have to go to coalinga to attend court. no ifs and buts about it. there's no request transfer to a court near you. you HAVE to drive back all the way to coalinga.

if this is your first speeding ticket, don't expect a break. the judge will only respond to you by saying, "look, it only takes one time for you to kill someone on the road." i wanted to respond, "what the fock are you talking about?! i was the only one on the road... it was 1145pm on a wednesday night! arsehole!" but i didn't. hehe.

the fine is $1600+ for reckless driving. although, the judge will give you a break if this is your first speeding ticket. usually half off. and if you have looked up about the CA maximum speeding ticket fine not exceeding $500... that's wrong. CA has raised that penalty.

you will also have to forfeit your driver's license for a month (suspension). if you drove alone to the court, the judge will issue you a one day driving pass to drive back.

also, it's 2 points on your record for the next 3 years. expect to pay A LOT in auto insurance. with 0 points, i only payed 1200 a year. now, having 3 points on my record for the next 2 years... i'm paying $5200 a year!

and oh, since it's reckless driving. you can't go to driving class to remove it.

hope that helps.

I'm surprised he didn't cuff you and bring you to jail. That's what he's supposed to do anyways, but good luck fighting the ticket. Talk to the DA like someone else said earlier.

I don't have a lot of experience in this...but if you go to college this might help. Most schools have a program where law students will do a whole s*** load of book work for you for free, so you can get all the legal angle stuff and be ready for your court date. Not quite as good as actually getting a lawer, but it's free...

Correction on jail and impounded car, those two things happen when your under 18. I was informed of this when talking to a cop after he issued me a fix it ticket. As long as your over 18 you just have to face what court offers you.

Try this first! My friend also got his Reckless Driving or Speed Exhibition (cant remember, but he was street racing) ticket reduced to 1 point speeding offence. Basically, it's worth it to jump over your head to resolve this before the court hearing - you might even want to hire a local lawer who would have more bargaining power with the DA. Btw, if you think lawer fees are high, compare it with the cost of insurance, mesed up driving record, and possible suspension of DL! Good luck with whole thing!
