Real Talk

So this week has been pretty rough. One of my best friends since I was a little kid lost his fight to cancer on monday. His parents decided to give me his 05 wrx in his memory. There was no way in hell that I was going to accept it. They insisted that I have it since I was always helping him work on it and they thought that is what he would of wanted. I picked it up tonight and now its just sitting in my garage. Should I just let it sit in my garage and take care of it or should I actually get it registered under my name, insured, and drive it? One thing I know for a fact is that im never goin to get rid of it. What do you guys think?

im sorry to hear about your friend, its got to be hard

i would keep the car in the garage and drive it on special occasions... especially since you have an 07 wrx. don't sell it, but you should go ahead and register it. if you cant afford having both wrx's registered and insured you could let it sit or you could sell yours and keep his... its up to you, its going to be expensive though. i think your smartest choice is going to be to let his sit in your garage unregistered, but sitting there won't be good for the car or its tires.

just my .02

Your post brought back memories from when my sweetie died many years ago. He had just been given a Mac by his Father. The family insisted that I have it. For months it sat in the corner and gathered dust. Eventually I plugged it in, booted it up and spent "time" with him. It was rather spooky finding things that he had written.

I found that I did not use the computer very much because I'm a PC person, not a Mac person. I loaned the computer to a Non Profit for a while that we had both been connected to and eventually after about 10 years I gave it away to someone who was in need of a computer. It was time to let go.

My condolences to you and your friend's family. Don't make a hasty decision - your heart will tell you what is the right thing to do with your friend's car.

im so sorry to hear that andy. i could imagine the things that are going through your head right now. when my grandmother left us last month, my mind was moving a mile a second. my deepest condolences.

i would keep the car. reg or unreg. i would keep it in his memory. i still have my cousin's name in my cell when he died 4 years ago from cancer. he was 22. just another reminder of how short life really is and to live life to its fullest.

right on for your input guys. Im for sure keeping it. I would never sell it. I just spent the last hour and a half just sittin inside the car thinkin about stuff. I think im goin to make the paperwork official and have a second car under my name. I just remembered, after reading all of your responses, that he always hated it when people bought nice cars and just washed them all the time and garaged them. He believed that its pointless to buy a performance car if your not goin to use it to its full potential. Im sure hes giving me the thumbs up right now.

Very sorry to hear about your loss.

From your description it sounds like the car would be best suited as a track project that actually gets used like he wanted to use it.

So sorry to hear about your friend.

I don't think you should track it because, knock on wood, if you crash it i think you would feel horrible because i would be really sentimental about the car.
I think you should just register it and drive it on the weekends as is.

Good luck with everything.

Meh... I honestly don't think i could drive it. I think i'd keep it spotless MAYBE drive it around the block, I couldn't risk it getting into an accident with it. I think i'd put it on jack stands and disconnect the battery and keep it in perfect condition for awhile

even though I would bet anything if he was still alive and you asked him, he would tell you to drive it and have as much fun with the car as you can until the car can't give it anymore... then throw it in your garage and bring it back to life... until it's dead again
