quick ? about downpipes

hey all, i'm at my buddy's shop and he has a custom DP that came off an 06 wrx that he will give to me. i wanted to get your opinion on this since i know there is some debate...

exhaust wise, i'm only running a Borla Hush catback. the only other modification to the engine is a K&N Typhoon intake.

is it a good idea to try out this DP? i know it'll make my engine run a bit rich, but without an accessport, is it a good idea? i have plans for getting an AP sometime soon, but a few months down the line.

any ideas or suggestions? thx guys

What kind of DP is it? You should be fine with out running an EM. A lot of people have been there. You just wont be able to take advantage of the TBE yet. I say go for it, but first figure out what kind it is.

Theres a link to DP. Good luck man!

1. What kind of DP?
2. Do you still have the 2.5 and 3" adapters that came with the Borla Hush?

The reason I ask those two questions is because even if a DP is 3" so of them are designed to mate w/ a stock style catback and taper down.

If you have no DP then I suspect you have the 2.5" attachment on your hush.

the DP may be custom, there is no brand on it by what we can tell. it had great welds and the hanger is solid as well.

the Hush is a 3" at the Cat so it should match up just fine. will see when we are down there...

would running a custom DP be not as desirable? we pressure tested it, there are no leaks and it's in dang good shape.

Your stock downpipe is not 3", so how could your Hush be 3" at the cat? doesn't make sense

No, it is not a good idea. The 2004+ wrx ecu does not like exhaust without tuning, there are a few on this board that have popped motors running exhaust and no tuning. The 2002-2003 was ok without em.

Dont do it, wait until you have the AP.

ur car will be fine just don't go on drives with it and don't bash the hell out of it. so when a meet/drive comes up look to hitch a ride with someone if you want to go, but yes it does run like poop, how do i know? b/c i have an 06 wrx turboback untunned.

yeah - i kinda figured it would not be the best idea. i did not put it on for the sake that i did not know enough. it was one of those last minute things so i thought i'd check in with you all.

good point verc - i had it in my head that my Borla was 3" at the cat, but it bolted right on to the stock pipe. clearly i'd need the adapter to put this on.

thanks for helping out a noob guys - if i was not on i-club, i probably would have just thrown it on for kicks.

So many people here have no idea what they're talking about...wait until you get the accessport, your car will thank you. As Subie ocd said, 02/03 is fine without EM, but later years running an aftermarket downpipe without EM is just asking for trouble.

its fine as it will run?

when you floor the car you will back fire and you CEL will comes on. its really really bad for the engine. it is very important that get the cobb ap before DP.

your car will run, but run good? no
