Questions about smogging.

Hi all. (Just for you wrxtunered)

My dad informed me that the new registration is in and that I'll be needing to go in for a smog check. Right now, I have an Ebay intake, Perrin lightweight pulley, and my JGT500 exhaust.

I was thinking that I put back the stock intake stuff, but as for the exhaust, what should I do? Should I borrow someone's L or 2.5RS exhaust or just leave it as is?

TIA.

Intake has already been painted. As for the exhaust.... nope. I am going need to get under the car and drop the headers/cat assembly to take care of an exhaust leak anyways, so yeah.

I think as long as you have the stock cats on and stock intake your good to go. Pulley will not affect emissions. I have a stock intake (my02) if you want to borrow it.

Thanks for the offer. I actually have the stock intake assembly. Probably take like an hour to get back on. I am just worried about the exhaust. Like I said, I have an exhaust leak and the only way that would be taken car of is if I were to drop the whole exhaust. I figure if I had to do that, I might as well get an L or 2.5RS on at the same time.

No one will publicly post the name of a shop that will fraudulently smog a car that will not pass on its own. The penalties for getting caught is a stiff fine for their business, much more than the cost of a smog test for your car. Subsequent infractions will lead to loss of their smog testing license.

Isn't the JGT500 just a catback? Technically, this is smog legal in CA and does not need a CARB E.O. number, as long as the factory cats remain in place and are functional.

Cool. Sounds good.

Wingless Wonder, do you know about the lightweight pulley? I was at a meet this morning and according to the guys, it can go either way.

Pulley should pass without problems because it does not alter emissions or sensor readings. Even an underdrive crank pulley doesn't actually alter emissions in any way because all it does is slow down the rotation speed of driven accessories for a couple of hp at higher rpm.

Make sure all OEM vacuum hoses are hooked up correctly and are not cracked or leaking. The smog stations all look at these things during the visual part of the inspection.

Thanks for the advice. I need to send this out by 06-16, so I have plenty of time to hunt for parts I don't have, but I think it should be pretty easy. I just need to have the exhaust leak taken care of and the stock intake/filter put back in.

It wouldn't hurt to change your spark plugs if they haven't been changed recently. Also driving the car for about 20 minutes, not idling, before the smog test helps get the catalytic converter(s) up to light-off temperature.

i think it's something like every 15K-20K miles, but i just change once a year in the summer. i run the cheap NGK V powers, so it's not like changing every year is costing me a whole lot of money.

Maintenance schedules for all model years:

How to change spark plugs on a WRX with coil packs. Changing spark plugs is just as easy on a car with spark plug wires rather than coil packs.

You'll have to look up the correct spark plug for your model year yourself, though. The above info was easily found using Search.
