Question regarding sales of a used vehicle

So I posted in the car for sales area and listed my car.

I know I have to get it smogged during a final sale, the question I had was that I got a Vehicle Registration Renewal Notice on my car and it requires a smog check first (perfect because I was going to end up having to smog it anywho on a sale.) The question is do I need to pay the registration renewal, even if the car will be owned by a different owner who will have to pay for transfer of the title? Or are those two separate entities?

Options

1) Sell car + Smog car + send it transfer of liability to DMV.
2) Sell car + smog car + pay for vehicle registration + send transfer of liability to DMV.

Do I need to register the vehicle (due date early April) before I sell the car? Or is it possible to smog the car, make the sale, and exclude paying registration fee as that will be on the buyers end?

If you sell it before the registration runs out, just smog it

If you sell it after the registration date, renew the registration or the new owner will be paying back fees

I think you can also qualify for a reimbursement after selling the vehicle if you renew the registration.

Yep, depends on whether or not you sell it before the tags are due. If you aren't driving it, register it as PNO, then the buyer can register it. If you are driving it, you have to pay it (if the tags expire). The smog is now good for 90 days, so you have 90 days to sell it before a new smog cert would be required.

you do not need to pay the registration fee, just smog the car and when they transfer into their name and pay fees they will also pay the new registration. There wont be any penalties since as long as the registration has not expired. BTW, I think I emailed you about your car on craigslist.

I just responded to a bunch of them like a dozen folks are interested in the thing.

I looked at KBB and then I looked on craigslist and figured I could lowball all their prices =P.

PS a side note you the seller are legally responsible for smog. unless they the buyer agrees in writing.
so just get the smog and let the buyer deal with the renewal. ooooor if you're nice seller, pay for it and make the other persons day.

Instead of mailing the Release of Liability to DMV,
you can do it online.

Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability

I normally do both. Ive got some horror stories of cars sold in the past and headaches I had to deal with for years to come.

I usually do it by mail for that reason too and I haven't had anything go wrong yet, but I've started doing all my other DMV stuff online recently and haven't had any issues either.
