PS3 Red Light of Death

Well, a day before Fallout New Vegas the PS3 decides to take a dump on me. I went out and bought a new one, but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask anyone on this site if they knew of a reputable PS3 repair shop in the bay area.

Any input?

Can I use the parts for anything other than a great paperweight??

There's a few options for repairs, which you could do yourself or have someone else. Some people (seems a little closer to "most") are able to fix their PS3 by taking it apart and re-doing the thermal paste then putting it back together. I tried that a couple times on my 60GB and it didn't fix it. Not saying it won't (heard it fix a lot of other PS3's) but it could be the same problem as mine and be the power unit thats bad. I don't get any power at all. You can also send it in to Sony for them to repair. Costs $150 so it might not be the cheapest repair, but atleast its done by Sony and I believe you get a warranty aswell. I've thought about doing this but hesitate cause when opening your PS3 there's this sticker that says "VOID" all over it. Not sure if they'll still repair it or if its for the warranty which is long gone anyways.

If you have a costco membership, go return the one you just bought and get it from costco instead. Little known fact: A game console is not a computer, camera or TV according to Costco, so it falls under their lifetime warranty. If it ever breaks, and I mean ever, or you are unsatisfied with it, they will take it and give you what you paid for it back. I bought an xbox from them 4 years ago now, it red ringed twice, I returned it once to get the halo 3 special edition, and then returned that to get a PS3. What could have easily cost me $1,500 cost me $350.

Yeah, I nearly cried when I thought I had lost my MW2 online stats... I still lament the loss of all my saved game data, so if you can mod-hook-it up, i'd be much obliged. I bought a slim PS3 a few minutes after being told the PS3 couldn't be fixed... If it can be fixed, even temporarily - I wouldn't mind having two PS3s.

Avoid Sony repair. Warranty is only 90 days. It's not another year. Also, they send you refurbished ps3 and not your own that is fixed. My refurbished ps3 failed in less than a year. Since you got another ps3, invest on fans. I have small external fans that keep ps3 cool.

pay sony the 150 to repair it and then sell it for 200... advertise it as a 3D blu-ray player, because with the 3.50 software it now can play 3d blu-ray

Probably not worth all that trouble to make 50 bucks.
