Problem with parking (on hills)..need help!

Ok heres the situaton..I live on a hill, and was going to the WRX downwards. So i did the typical things...I pointed the wheels to the curb, threw the car in first gear, shut off the clutch and let go of the clutch gently....I thought the car was suppose to stop, but it kept on going down hill....Is this normal for WRX's?..did i do anything wrong?...Am i suppose to put it in reverse instead of first gear?...Could I have done any damage(the car wasen't turn on when rolling)

**Note** I just got the WRX 2 days ago, its a 2002 with 17K miles..bone stock...

well if its facing downhill then you would want to put it in reverse. oh and putting the parking brake on helps as well. and wouldn't turning the wheels into the curb prevent the car from rolling downhill?

I'm trying to understand this. You had it in gear, the parking brake was all the way up, and the tires were pointed toward the curb? You must be leaving something out because I could see one of these failing, but not all three. Maybe I misunderstood what you said.

Stupid question, but why reverse? aren't reverse and 1st the same gear ratios?

Crazy, there has to be something wrong. I could see one thing fail, but not all three. Have you called the dealer to inform them on the problem? That would be the first thing that I would do. Also, stop the car on a flat spot and put it into gear. Then go behind the car or have a friend push the car. See if it moves. Try it with the parking brake. If it does, then show the dealership. They would then have to fix it.

you didn't put it on 1st gear!. . . you thought you put it on first gear but you didn't. If you did, then there's something wrong with your car.

Here's what happened to my car when I didn't put it on 1st and didn't put the Ebrake all the way up....
