Yep, the Honda does drive better but its hybrid system is inferior. It doesn't run just on the motor up to 40mph like the Prius can. it also has an inferior navigation system and has NO bluetooth integration, not to mention lacking bixenon headlights like the Prius. I don't like driving with halogens. the styling of the civic is better, though, and it is a bit cheaper. I think the seats are better on the Civic hybrid too.

At this stage in this recurring stupid conversation - do you think there is really anything you can do with a text box that will convince me that buying a Prius is a good decision? Since you are defending the Prius, I doubt that you will share my point of view. So what is the point? Either way, I am okay with it.

The car has a solid set of pro's and con's - one just needs to decide whether it works for them. Some of the cons are things that people might not understand or we might not even face in our lifetime. Me personally, I think it is silly to pay "a lot of money" for something that is supposed to save money. The Yaris example is because you can buy commute gas for the next ~150k miles for the price savings even at $4/gal.

A friend raves about his SMG M3, but me - all I can think of is this horrid complex conglomeration of systems designed to do something for me that I prefer to do myself. Sort of the same thing. I would rather have a light and simple car than a complex and heavy one. It doesn't get much more complex than a hybrid, and a car that is over 3klbs (EVEN WITH DRIVER/FUEL) is too heavy for me. When the pro's start to outweigh the con's with hybrids, maybe that will change. If someone else were buying and maintaining my vehicles for me, maybe that would change things too.

I do not want you to dislike your Prius. I definitely do not want one myself though and it's for a lot of reasons. I feel sorry for the people I see tearing by 80+mph in their Prius with a license plate and stickers proclaiming that they are saving the world by driving this car. I feel people like that are painfully stupid and possibly equally righteous. Maybe I am the one who is mistaken - again, that works for me.

Cheers.
I guess I'm still not understanding why you continue to compare the Yaris to the Prius. The Prius is a much more substantial car with 4 doors and a much bigger trunk. It has more torque and better quality materials. It is quieter and has much better appointments including smart key systems, a backup camera, a mileage display, and a better radio. Granted, it will take like 200,000 miles for the Prius to save enough gas to be as cheap as a Yaris, but I don't think Prius buyers are cross shopping them against the Yaris. I think they're more comparing them to the Camry or the Accord which are only a few thousand cheaper but get much worse mileage ($20,000 and 30mpg vs. $22,000 and 45-55mpg depending on habits).

I also like light and simple cars that are heavy in driver involvement. That's why I race Spec Miatas, drive karts, and have a relatively optionless M3 (no moonroof or power anything) to drive to and from school about 60 miles a week. Now, when I commute during the summer, I need something relatively economical. It's nice to have a quiet, smooth ride for the crappy bay area roads, and it also is nice not to have to deal with traffic. That's where the Prius comes in--extremely nice option for the roads, traffic, and gas prices of the Bay Area today.

I agree with you that ignorant smug people suck. We'll just have to differ on our opinions of the hybrids of today. I think the "pros" already outweigh the "cons" on today's compact hybrids (i.e. not the Lexus GS450h or LS600h, or Tahoe Hybrid), and the "pro's" will only get better with the 2010 Prius, new HCH, new Fit hybrid, etc. and as gas prices shoot higher into the $5 or $6 territory.

I love what i started. dont get me wrong. the prius is ok to drive. but thats why i bought a WRX and not a second prius. cuz its more fun. And i think if i am drivng 25000 miles a year i should have a tiny bit of fun.

We get great gas mileage in the prius. it is super quiet in the cabin and relatively smooth ride. lets put it this way the baby falls asleep faster in her car than mine.

No its not really pink. its that maroon color. And yes prius owners drive crazy. to be honest wghen i drive it and i am hitting 80mph-85mph it really doesnt feel like you are going that fast.

Its got nav and a cool screen that lets you watch when you are generating power and using different engines. BUt damn everytime i get in the car it warns me not to look at the screen while driving. that gets annoying after a while.

its a 2005. we got a cool rebate when we bought it. $3000 if i remember correctly. it really is a nice car but i prefer to drive the scoob.

I am not a tree hugger. if i was i wouldnt be filling my rex tank twice a week.
BUt i am a young dad and i have to save money somewhere. I just know people are looking at me like im retarded thats my beef against it. Tons of room decent stereo.

AND THE BEST PART:

THE MAKE A FREAKING COLD AIR INTAKE FOR IT. w00t! pimpin the prius here i come. i gotta get some re01's for this bad boy.

Also, re: nickel - you may want to check your coin jar. You could be destroying the environment as we speak, one nickel at a time. I also take it you don't have a digital camera, cell phone or anything else that uses NH batteries.

Also, re: nickel - nickel has been around a bit longer than the Prius. I hope on that we can agree. Just how much nickel is evil Toyota buying from the Sudbury nickel mines? I believe about 1-2% (Sudbury mines @ 15% of the world's nickel).

Perhaps you should target your anti-nickel campaign elsewhere - the only way you could have any worse of an argument against NH batteries would be to quote the thoroughly debunked "Dust to Dust" article.
are you seriously THAT stupid

You clearly have no grasp on the chemical breakdown of NiMH and what happens in the conversion process. First off, its not NH, its NiMH, thats Ni(OH)2 + OH` ⇔ NiOOH + H2O + e` when charging, but NiOOH + H2O + e` ⇔ Ni(OH)2 + OH` when discharging. The problem is as its charged and discharged the electrode breaks down and ends up an oxide (I believe its NiO2 + H20, the NiO2 is the problem) if you didn't know, and its bonded, meaning you can't break down the compound without a great deal of power.

In a lead acid battery the amount of power to break down the lead oxide is much lower, and the acids can easily be broken down into H2O and H with a bit of carbon left over. All of which can be recycled again.

So my ignorant friend, before you spout off about "anti Ni" first learn your notations and second study up on basic chemistry .

You must be the ONLY person to drive a Prius that fast! I have never, ever seen a Prius drive fast.

I don't mind a hybrid, but I hate the Prius. I don't know what it is but Smug, Self-righteous feel comes to mind, not to mention you can get better gas mileage for commuting with a TDI, and about the same MPG with a small non-hybrid.
I have always wanted to create an anti-prius commercial that looks like the "YES" commercials they had on TV, but there are a series of people holding up "NO" signs while driving their performance vehicles.

My wife bought a prius in 2005 (before we were married) to replace a Ford Explorer. So in terms of saving money on gas, we're saving tons from what we came from. We weren't comparing cars like the civic or other sub-compacts at the time. Too small. The prius, other than being a hybrid has many other attributes that made it a worthwhile purchase. Did you know that the prius actually has comparable interior room to a Camry? When we fold down the seats in the back we can actually haul almost as much stuff as we did when we had the Explorer. Plus, with the baby seat in my wife does not have to assume a yoga posture to fit in the passenger seat like she would if we were in my STI instead. It's got a lot a nice features that make it a decent commuting "car" regardless of whether or not it is a hybrid. The hybird feature is a bonus. At 75K+ miles we haven't had a single problem with it. Can't be said about my friends' Volkswagen. So in addition to functionality, the reliability has been another good point for us. As someone stated before, I wouldn't compare the prius to other subcompacts out there. Those cars are too small and wouldn't fit our needs as a family. The Prius' size just fits a good niche. Guess that's why Honda had to come out with their Insight despite already having a Civic hybrid eh?

Lastly, for me, believe it or not, I do enjoy taking the Prius out from time to time. I enjoy the anonymity of it. No one looks at you, no one thinks of your car as a threat to their manhood, and I've largely enjoyed being ignored in the car. It allows me to drive in peace which I appreciate after long stints in the STI and all the attention it gets.

Funny enough I remember seeing a Prius on Enkie RPF1s, painted calipers, exhaust (muffler shop grade) with full limo tint...this was last spring in the Fremont area right across the Dumbarton bridge.

However, is there a reason no one mentioned diesel powered cars yet?...I have friends back in Chicago who own both cars (in this case a manual Golf TDI) and the Golf consistently gets better gas millage from they tell me.

If I had a prius I think I'd do it up in some heavy death metal grafix, flames and skulls, stuff like that...
At least that way people would laugh with me instead of at me.

Amen brother. My wife got hers in 05 before we were married also. It is nice to not have chp even look at you when you are driving it.

and you have seen too many VW commercials.

actually i have heard that too but they still get good gas mileage. even at 80 mph i am still getting 25-30 mpg so there is a trade off.

plus the best of my wife driving the prius, since my gas is so expensive and she rarely fills up. the money she saves in gas goes right into my car.

I actually have not owned a TV for the past couple years, so I have been blissfully unaware of any media propaganda

Yep, the Prius gets better mileage than an Explorer - no doubt. Would be curious to know more about the Explorer - payments now vs payments then, insurance now vs then, etc. The "buying a new expensive car to save money" thing is nothing new and usually makes people feel sort of dumb after a little math. If you like it and you are happy with it - that's great, and really all that matters! It's probably much nicer driving around a Prius, or any other smaller car, than the Explorer as well. It is probably worth the expense in your case, and quite possibly a good fit for your situation.

It's pretty funny reading some of these replies. I used the Yaris example to demonstrate that, even from Toyota's own model line there are cars that show the Prius is CLEARLY not an economy car, and because at $10,000 cheaper, the math was easy. Sure, it's a nice if not overly expensive "commuting car" that has fancy features and gets good mileage. So what. There are lots of nice cars out there. This one has a stigma for a reason. If you need this explained, then you are not paying attention.

In order to address the size, features and interior build quality issues some have raised, I present the Honda Fit Sport. A car that, for people like me who enjoy driving and saving money, makes the Prius even more useless. More interior cargo space, more leg room front and rear, and shoulder, head and etc is around the same. Available with Nav, standard with iPod and USB integration w/ a great sound system, cruise control, power windows/locks, tilt/tele wheel, keyless entry/alarm, 16" alloy wheels, and probably loads more that I forgot. The interior material quality is easily as good as the Prius (in my opinion). The drivability is WORLDS apart as the Fit feels like a sports car compared to the Prius. This is based on my 2009 Honda Fit Sport compared to a friend's 2007 Prius I spent some time with as well as the other Prii I have been exposed to over the years.

Here's a vid on the subject, but note that this is comparing the 2008 Fit which is not nearly as nice as the newer model starting in 2009.

Problem is... A Prius is a "trendy must have" for some while the Fit is just a great car. I don't think anyone can convince anyone else that a Prius is the right or wrong decision on either side of this. It's sort of like trying to get someone to change religions or something.

Oh sweet, that's about what the fuel display says the Fit is getting around those speeds though I have never seen it as low as 25. Closer to normal highway speeds on trips it goes between 37 and 41mpg. This is going by the onboard mpg computer though, so I need to check it against reality when I get a chance.

The HOV lane thing, as stupid as it is, really is a benefit though. My sis picked up a Civic hybrid just for this purpose. With her commute, she saves a good chunk of time.
