Prepping a car for an inexpensive paint job

Alright so I'm picking up an AW11 MR2 or a miata soon as a DD. I've read before on the intraweb that places like Miracle, Maaco can do a pretty good job if you prep the car well for them.

Anybody had experiences with this? I'm thinking I do the taping, strip the paint and spray on/sand the primer before taking it in.

Thanks,
Ambert

Car Info: Subaru?
my friend just had a miata done at earl scheib in oakland for $520 otd, full exterior with clear coat but no door jams, trunk, or engine. he had a white miata with the paint chipping problem, so first he sanded all the paint off himself and then just primered it with a spray can. earl scheib did the rest, and it came out pretty good. id suggest taking off all stuff you dont want painted, like your tail lights, blinkers, etc... it makes it easier for them, and you dont have to worry about poor masking.
