Question powdercoating rims?

I've read about some people believing rims to crack easier due to powdercoating, but the few people that I know that have powdercoated thier rims have been fine for years and years.

With that said... I'm still iffy on the process due to everything I read over the years on the subie forums. Anybody in baic ever get a set of wheels powdercoated? If so please state where you got it done (and price would be nice also..), --and more specifically, if you ever had any problems.

i had some wheels powdercoated before.

they were some advan RG copies, distributed by 5zigen (some ricer wheels). i bought them used from this guy, who said that one of them cracked before. i bought them off him.. and what do u know, one of them cracked. the guy i bought them from had 3 extra white ones so he gave them to me, i got 1 powdercoated, and what do u know, it cracks.

not sure if it was just a poor spoke design and terrible casting or what.

btw i've heard of real advan RGs cracking before too, so go figure.

can't really point the finger :Shrugs:

if you want to get them done right goto Mike at electro plating specialities in hayward. i was worried about the same issues and the process he does to remove the original coat and put on the new coat is very gentle on the wheels. he assured me everytime i asked him that the chemicals and process used WILL NOT hurt the strength of the wheels. he said that some places will bake them at 700 degrees to get the original coat off and that is usually where the integrity of the wheel is compromised. i just got some Volk TE37's powdercoated bronze from him and they came out great.

I also recommend wheel techniques in santa clara. According to them, painting can be just as strong and heat resistant as powdercoating... and you get more color options.

so really, it's all about the process of taking off the orginal coats on there. Not sure why you would use the heat method to take off the coats for powdercoating. I know that it has to be stripped and clean of any debris or paint. But I would just use some jascos...is that way a lil ghetto?

Here is a thread a while back with some shops as well.

Moss bros in Livermore is like a mile from my house. I stopped by one time and they said they can do it. But I never asked how they strip the old paint off (with heat etc etc..) I am planning to powdercoat some stock STi rims to dark gray or black. But if they are going to be compromised maybe I should not

I tried doing a anywho search for "electro plating specialities"(Sp?)
but came up with nothing, can you give me an address/number/link?

Also just curious what mike's process is--does he sandblast the initial color off?
And how long does he bake for at what temperature.

Sorry one last thing, volk te37's are forged aluminum right?
I'm thinking of powdercoating a set of forged aluminum rims and so far
I've heard bad things about powdercoating forged aluminum in particular,
from the "other" forum.

thanks!
