Northstar is great for a beginner. I found this great motel to stay at right in Kings Beach, I think, it was pretty cheap and pretty nice. I cant remember the name of it for the life of me though. Im gonna try to find it right now.
gret place for beginner
wish their was more steep stuff but its a good resort
weekdays they have lift + hotel room for 92 dollars, which is pretty good. the room is on the resort
when are you planning on goin
i go there a lot

northstar's a pretty good hill for beginner and intermediates
there's a lot to do there for others who don't ski as well. (the innertube thing is pretty cool)
as for staying, king's beach is prolly ur best bet.. truckee will be expensive, and northstar itself is usually pretty expensive.
i always stay at king's beach

Kings Beach to Northstar is usually less than 30 minutes door to door. Northstar parking lots get really busy during peak season, but it shouldn't be a problem at this time of year. I'm staying with some friends this weekend in the Dollar Hill area just outside of Tahoe City. We'll probably do a day at Northstar and a day at Squaw.
I agree with the others, Northstar is great for beginners, families etc. because of the terrain, and because they are friendly and helpful. However, for the intermediate to advanced, its kinda flat, lacks variety, and doesn't have much vertical so the steep runs are short.

hahaha
their staffing is cool, but not the smartest
a guy i met went up to northstar, fell, broke his collarbone (didn't know it at the time)
the paramedic guy at the scene said it was only bruised and shouldn't worry about it
so the guy didn't go to the doc for a week (rode the next day too)
ended up the bones broke straight in half and were over lappign each otehr
granted he should have gone to the doc anyways, sorta worried about who they are hiring

My parents live at Kings Beach part of the time. It's a really nice area and there are a lot of motels right on the lakefront. There's also a few decent restaurants right around Kingsbeach. Spindelshanks is great for a date, but they're all fairly expensive (that's Tahoe for you). The Nevada border is fairly close too, so you can go gamble, but the casinos right on the border are pretty lame. There's a snowmobile rental place right where you turn off to head to Northstar (next to the Safeway I think).
The drive to Northstar from Kings Beach is short, but it's one lane uphill, then downhill, so if there are some jackasses out then it can be a little slow going.
Northstar itself has some lodgings if all you are going to do is skii/snowboard, but there's not much else right around the resort. The resort is perfect for beginners (and ther's a lot more REAL intermediate areas than Boreal). The only thing I don't like is when it's warm out, the top of the mountain can be frozen solid while the bottom of the mountain is slush. So when you're taking a long run, you hit this slurpee mix pretty hard and it tends to make me bail.

If you stay in kings beach, go to Lanza's for dinner. It's the best italian food on the lake. The resturant is right next to safeway, you can't miss it. Go the bar and tell Rick the bartender, Josh from San Diego sent you..
Have fun.
