Possible problem?
I was racing someone today after filling up a tank of gas from Costco. I redlined 1st (no awd launch or anything), redlined 2nd, and shut it down in 3rd at 80 mph. Everything was fine, but then I had 2 blocks away from my street to make a right turn. I was in the far left lane and had to pass the guy I was racing (he gave up). So from a stop I shift at 4k in 1st, and then redlined it in 2nd. As I come to a stop to make my right turn, I hear a weird noise as I stepped on the gas (in 1st) and also in 2nd gear. It sounded kind of like a ringing cow bell but with a duller sound. The sound seemed like it was coming from underneath, perhaps the tranny? I stopped the car and revved it to 2k rpms in neutral and it made that noise again. As I started moving again 20 seconds later, the noise stopped.
20 minutes later I arrive at school to find a parking space. I was parking downhill. As I put it into reverse, the noise came back after passing 3k or so. I tried doing the same thing again but no more sound.
Going home today, I hear a constant small ringing sound once again. It's not nearly as loud as what I experienced up above, but it's noticeable with the radio off and the windows up, or coasting in neutral.
What could be the problem? Is this considered knocking? (I've never experienced knocking before). Btw, I've used Costco gas many many times and I never experienced anything wrong.
Did I screw up my tranny? I can get into every gear and every gear works though.
My car is stock except for a catback muffler.

That's exactly what I was thinking: the exhaust or something similar. When you said "cow bell" sound I laughed out loud, heh, like "maybe you ran over a cow while racing and her bell got stuck"
Seriously though, your transmission isn't likely to ring out (heh) when something goes wrong. You're far more likely to hear loud bangs or bone-chilling crunches. So get under the car and inspect all the bushings and hangers for the exhaust or anything thats hanging. If you can, although your muscles probably can't provide the same level of momentum that is produced when you car shifts weight, try to shake things around. You also might try to reproduce it your hill parking with a friend near the car and on the ground looking and listening.
Which exhaust do you have? And have you replaced your rear sway bar?

my catback is Tanabe SMR, and for a while, while I still had stock hangers, I would hear clanging vibrations every time I took a hard right turn.
I found out later that the tabs almost at the end of the rearmost hanging bars, were rubbing on the tabs on the car that hold the hangers on the chassis.
I had the tabs ground down on the exhaust, and a full set of Kartboy hangers installed, and the problem went away.

sorry I couldn't help myself there, besides dahveed started it!
Also check the heat sheild and things around the turbo- some of that might "ding" if it works loose.
BTW- don't race in the streets- it's highly illegal and people get hurt that way

By any chance, was it raining the day you heard the sound? My catback slips on the Kartboy hangers when it's really wet out. Most noticeable on the freeway but around town it didn't hit. I'm pretty sure I can fix it easily but haven't gotten around to it. When it's dry out, it doesn't hit.
