police training exercise!?
i was pulled over by a new officer, asked a few perfunctory questions, and sent on my way without a ticket. while the new guy was running me through the system, another officer had a few (tricky) questions for me. one question was pretty standard and the other was indirect but telling. what was really interesting is that i rated more than one cruiser.

Yeah i was driving on Highway 50 before i deployed and i got pulled over by CHP. The officer talking to me was clearly a trainee. The Training Officer just stood back and watched. The trainee had me open my hood and tried to tell me that my stock STI intercooler was aftermarket and illegal. After we didnt come from around the hood for a few minutes (because we were arguing about the intercooler) the training officer finally came up. I explained the situation because the trianee couldnt even do that. The training officer asked me to get back in the car, had a few words with the training and came back to me. He basically told the trainee he was an idiot and to let me go.

Seemingly routine questions such as "where are you coming from?", "where are you headed?", "have you had anything to drink", etc are all probing questions designed to get reasonable suspicion to detain you.
