Basically so it can be seen...since without the key in you can’t keep your lights onn..
when i got my car I asked the same thing but now i see why they added this option....i work for a freight company and I have to sometime drive to the shipping docks in the port of stockton. At 4:00am its dark and there are tons of diesels moving around in ever which way, i leave my lights on every time I get out of my car (which is often) so that no one accidentally backs into my car or something..

It's for snowy situations, and parking in Europe/Japan....
When it's snowy, having your turn signals stay on when your car is off helps you from losing your car under snow.
In Europe (prob. Japan too), sometimes you have to park on streets so narrow that you need to keep your turn signal on so that someone doesn't smack your car whizzing by...

I turn em on sometimes when I just want a little illumination to show where the car is, like when I'm running around in a darkened parking lot. There's not a lot of point to that switch though...

They are for when you leave your car on a busy street for a lil bit, and no I have never intentionally used them.
I agree the cupholders are a little bit of a pain too. I can not eject a CD while using the in-dash one. And with the center one I always hit my drink with my elbow when I shift.
Good thing about the in-dash holder is that if you have your AC on it keeps your drink cool.

No problem with the size of either one. I'm referring to the one in the center console. My passenger pushes the damn thing and it ejects all of an inch. So they pull it out and try to stick their drink in and realize that they have to jimmy it out another inch before the bottom pops down. Followed by the inevitable, "How much did you pay for this car?" Sheesh....

In some parts of Hong Kong, it's the norm to drive around with parking lights instead of headlights since: 1) it's bright enough at night to see other cars, 2) you don't need to blind other drivers in the tight streets and busy traffic, 3) so your car doesn't get smacked into when it's parked in a ****-ant small alleyway. But I never use my parking lights alone here in the States
