My suggestion is that you check the tide books. The creek has consumed countless cars, trucks, and SUVs.
Go at low tide and go low to the water line. The lip from the creek will OWN a suby front bumper.
The 15 MPH is strictly enforced and is expensive.
The prices are what I paid last time I went +$1.00 for the dog.
It is not illegal to offer to pull someone out...only illegal to charge them/accept cash for doing it.
Also, plan according to the tide times for when you will getting there/going home if you are camping. High tide consumes most of the hard pack and you will need to go in the soft stuff at high tide.
Sand Highway is a constantly changing trail...some days its hard and smooth others it has bumps and drops greater than a suby's clearance.
Pismo is by far one of the best places to go camping. I am from San Luis Obispo and until last year I was there every weekend in the summer and for all of the three-day weekends.
If you want to see one hell of a party and bon-fire go to comp hill on a three-day weekend! w00t!
Oh and for you non-campers - there are no services on the beach camping area. You need to bring everything - food, water, etc. You just pick a spot in the sand and set up - there are porta-potties out there though.
I suggest you bring some tarps and a camp shovel too. Park in a semi-circle with the folks you are there with so that the cars are on the north and shore side of your camp -close the tarps into the bottom of your doors, then shovel sand onto them....this will create a wind and sand-storm block for you and will make the trip 100% better....otherwise you get cold and sand blasted from about 4:30 in the afternoon until about 7 in the morning.
Open fires are allowed on the beach in a hole that you dig.
Also, be sure someone puts all the booze and bongs away before you fall asleep face down in the sand. The rangers check "camping" permits (the receipt you get at the gate) early in the morning, and they may wake you up if it looks like kids were drinking or you have "other" substances with you.
I may have to come out for this one.......if not HAVE FUN!!
