Too bad we're the only country to follow ROE...otherwise that ship woulda been sunken. There's gotta be some secret squirrel plan though, why they would send a helo for recon with no plans of attack doesn't make sense.

Its called "provoked reaction" if they can get the skinnies to fire on a US owned plane and hit it (key word there) then we have the right, under international law to return fire.

This would more than likely come in the form of a US seal team slipping aboard said ship...and lots of very dead skinnies.

Read Lone Survivor, talk to some vets who are in foreign countries where the enemy dresses as civilians and the problems ROE create in those situations.

I agree that we shouldn't open fire on anything that looks at us sideways, but I don't think most soldiers would. Discretion > ROE.

I'm in the military and deal with different ROE's they're there for a reason and I'm glad they are. I've seen how many others are out in the hazard areas and for people brand new to the service especially the ROEs are a necessity.

The navy won't send up a unarmed aircraft without some kind of protection. So even if it was a MH-60A (non armed), then someplace in strike range was a pair of F-18 fighters, or a couple of MarineAV-8B Harrier II jump jets ready to pounce. Its SOP on all navy missions to have jets in the air, and birds on the 'pults in a "alert 5" spot.

Cool

The ROE for that particular AO should be to eliminate any targets of opportunity with extreme prejudice.

That's fine. I'm a former sailor too. I can not count the amount of times in 3yrs of flight quarters, we sent our bird equipped with nothing. The armament they are capable of carrying was never fit to the aircraft. Certainly never equipped with hellfires. While flying MIO in the gulf we did fit an M60.

Only thing that "weapon" was ever good for.

Regadless, that area is too sensitive for that type of ROE

They weren't there for hostage negotiation and retrieval, as I read it. More of a "know what the hell is going on out there" recon flight.

Now we know, and knowing is half the battle.

Enter 1 fast attack submarine, stage left.

Sub reaches periscope depth, launch a couple of torpedos.

Sub comes up, takes positions at 50 caliber gun station, and target practice with heads bobbing up from the surface.

Whoever's not dead will be soon with the blood in the water...
