what is the difference between X series or think pads?
I bet you will find that your CPU speed is more valuable to photoshop working speeds than the amount of memory you have. This is especially true when you use a solid state HDD which increases read/write speeds substantially.

The X-series is just the smallest/compact one in the ThinkPad product line. The T-series is the middle ground, and the W-series is the largest. For photoshop I would take the W-series because it has optional built in color calibration sensor and a full size 95% gamut screeen.

Also, NEVER buy memory upgrades from the laptop manufacturer. Lenovo charges ~$1080 for 32Gb of ram installed, but you can get the same 32Gb from NewEgg for ~$140 and install it yourself very easily.

most likely needs to replace the thermal paste or do some maintenance on the cooling system.

Well, the thing is, alot of desktop replacement gaming laptops use actual desktop chips in their laptops. hence the giant power bricks and heat.

Would a quadro chip be more suitable for photoshop purposes?

One thing I forgot to add, is if you're working with a lot of photoshop, the screen makes a huge difference. It's going to push the cost of the laptop up, but getting a higher resolution screen will make a ton of difference.

Screen resolution has actually gone down in the recent years, and 1080 and even 900 resolutions are becoming increasingly scarce as the general public doesn't care. Just something to keep an eye on when shopping for laptops. One thing that apple is doing right, amazing screen resolution.

Another good candidate to look at is HP Elitebook. It's HP Business series, not the one you buy from Best Buy or Frys - it's way different.

WOW the plugs on the side of that thing are bad ***, they have EVERYTHING, including a price tag that kills it for me. I really like all the features though.

I'd stay away from HP (except maybe the elite stuff wwrx mentioned), had some bad experiences with their quality & more important the support over the past years. My last personal laptop was a HP, after ~2 years i got fed up with it & gave it to goodwill, slow, ran hot, too much bloatware. My mom had one of the mini laptops, nice piece of kit, but spoiled when the webcam quit, the warranty process took forever, like more than 3 months to resolve when she didnt have the computer she had paid for while HP f'ed around trying to fix it rather than just send a new piece. When they finally gave up they sent a new piece, but it had a spanish keyboard, that took another 3 weeks to resolve. Totally frustrating PITA. [/rant]
