hahah, trust me, with the way I drive there at night, if there was a cop there, he'd have busted me already. Only thing I would worry about is animals and such. There are boars, deer, bears (By bears, I mean rabbits), etc.

though driving down in the morning after not much sleep can be a bit hairy.

Yeah, I always turn my lights off when I get up to the top.

That's awesome. Anyway you can set up some kind of tour of the domes? (Like, while you guys are going observations and such)?

Well, except the control room, but if you've seen one room full of computers, you've seen them all. The thing is, we never look through telescopes anymore when doing professional, scientific observations. Electronic CCDs are much more sensitive than your eyes (or photographic film) and you have a record of the observations. So when we're observing, it's a lot like using a digital camera attached to the telescope, though often our exposures are for a long time to see really faint things, and we have computers to control the telescope and camera, etc. and just look at the images on the screen. It's a lot different from the movies.
So if you want to see the telescopes themselves (and they are cool!) come during the day. Info at http://www.ucolick.org/public/visitors.html
-- also check out the summer visitor program,
when you can come in the evening and actually look through some of the telescopes,
which is really awesome: http://www.ucolick.org/public/visitors.html
