Paid Sick Days

Hey guys,

I'm trying to figure out which job offer to take.

There is this office manager position in a private equity firm in SF that sounded pretty cool until I read "expect 2 sick days". Alright, so the salary is below market value, and maybe I've been babied by the non profit world cuz we usually get 10 to 12 days of paid sick leave since people can get sick for more than 2 days a year. Okay, at least I do. I don't want to have to be going into work when I'm having a fever or whatnot.

This firm says that in practice they are real flexible and do not track days people take off (since it's mostly made up of partners and associates), but I don't want to just have 2 sick days on paper. Can I really take that on faith (even though the old office manager did tell me it's flexible in practice cuz she did it that way).

Help. I gotta have my decision ready by 4:30pm, and I need to get over this 2 day hurdle!

Check with someone in H.R., they would be able to tell you if this is even legal, and if it's something worth signing.

Ask them not to put a total on paper. That way you can take what you need to and avoid potential problems from meddling middle managers later.

I was looking on Monster.com and read that there is a range between 5 to 15 days of sick leave companies offer. I just don't know if I can deal with 2 days. I'd better make sure that there are no negative repercussions if I end up needing more than 2 days.

follow BAN SUVS instructions, if they say they don't care, then they need to put it on paper, by either spelling out a greater number of days, or by omitting an actual number.

I have not taken a sick day since 1998! And then I had some nasty strep throaght and an infection so I couldn't even get out of bed.

Sick days are for weenies!

Damn civilians. If we (GI's) are feeling under the weather, we have to report for a doctor 1st thing in the morning, and the nearest doc is in Travis, or at Monterey. Then they have to grant us a SIQ (Sick In Quarters) permission slip. Then you have to take it back to work, and then you get to go home, but you must be back to work the next day, or the process starts all over again!

It is easier just to suffer through a day of work!

We used to accrue sick days at my old company, right along side vacation days. The smartest thing to do is save all of your sick days, and when you leave the company cash them out. Ca-Ching!!!

Also, if you take more than 2 sick days max a year at most manufacturing companies(Medical Device), you will have a talking to by the Director. So at my newest company, there is no such thing as paid sick days. All of it comes out of your vacation paid time off.

I used to think this way when I was young and carefree. Now that I'm married with children, I have to have some sick days to take the kids to the doctor for example. At 2 years old, they can't drive themselves!

So, what did you decide? One factor I see commonly for those who use a little more sick leave are people (families) with young children. If both parents are working, one of them will elect to stay home with the sick youngster, using a few more days of sick leave than they would use just for themselves.

I would ask them to fax you a copy of the full sick leave policy just to see the details. Otherwise assume you only get two days and anything beyond that comes out of your vacation. (Yes, that would be monumentally stupid of an employer -- "I'd rather ALL my employees were sick at the same time!" Yes, there are many monumentally stupid employers in this world.)

The last place I worked had no clear limit on paid sick leave (it may have been up to 6 months a year) but if you missed 3 days in a row, you had to have your doctor write a letter to HR, or you didn't get paid. And HR was slow enough that maybe you still didn't get that pay for a few months. The end result is that a lot of really sick peole would show up their third day into a bad flu just to avoid the paperwork, and then go out on sick leave again on the 4th day.

We also got 5 weeks of vacation a year, plus holidays, so it wasn't like anyone was taking sick leave for anything other than being sick. Oh how I miss that 5 weeks of vacation a year . . .

i would ask 'em again and also consider benefits of working for that company if there are any
like: will it build good networking? is it worth less pay and less sick days?
