I have a gold 74 super beetle for sale, I'm selling it for $1000 cash and have a bunch of aftermarket parts for it. Check out my listing in the "for sale" bay area forum. These VW's are pretty sick...the parts are cheap, easy to find and easy to install, the performance from a stock 1600cc engine is just fine for city driving, and they last a long time if you take care of them. Also having a sunroof on that little car is pretty sweet, you just roll down a window, hang your elbow out and go!

I've forgotten most of what I used to know but when buying a Bug, I'd always check the heater controls to see if you can detect exhaust gases. The heater boxes surround part of the exhaust manifold and that's what provides warm air to the passenger compartment.
This is true...if you're going to get an engine go no less than a stock dual-port 1600 engine found on the supers, they are way better than the old 1300 and they make about 60hp. Also, when you're buying a bug definitely check what they call the heat exchangers, they're the open holes behind the front seats that exchange the hot and cold air to make sure the engine doesn't overheat.

BTW my bug has no heat problems and has a 1.6 engine

Bankman, I have been thinking of getting one for awhile. Yours is cool but looking for something with more collectibility. Thanks for the insight though. I will definitely make sure to look at that. BTW, what exactly should I look for?

Here's some more info:

Stuff to look for when buying a bug; check for rust and expect at least some rust under the battery tray that's where most of it originates. make sure the engine and transmission are strong in every gear. check to see how much the car shimmies when it gets up to higher speeds. try to test the engine when it is cold and make sure the carburetor works ok when it's first started - that's not crucial, but it's a pain to have to adjust the automatic choke on the throttle every time you start the car if it sticks.

Will speak to you soon, later

I was also into air cooled VW's. I still own a 1776cc Type 1 motor with dual 40mm Dell's and a trans with upgraded gears that I had installed in my 1969 Beetle. I started to build a 1960 Beetle and a 1967 Bus, but I sold both when I became un-interested in them.

I am still looking for a Speedster Replica body or a Dune buggy to put my motor in and have some fun.

You arent the first person that has recommended the 67. I am looking for one of those or a mid-50s (ragtop oval would be tight!), though I know restoration on that will be more demanding.

My goal for this project is to bring something back to factory specs, with as many original components as possible. I have a WRX wagon so speed is not needed. This one is all about style.

Thanks again for your help.

Cheers,

Steve-
no problem. A '67 can be tricky to restore all original, as many parts are one year only on that model, here is a partial list of one year only items:

Engine cover (decklid)
Rear "apron" (sheetmetal below decklid, between two rear fenders)
Front hood (the "trunk")
window cranks
Stock air cleaner
Dash *****
Seatbacks (1/2 yr only)
Rear engine cooling baffle over muffler
Door lock *****
Outside door handles
Doors
R sway bar assembly
R transaxle axle-tubes
R axle shafts

My advice is to search hard for a good 1967 that has everyhting there, but maybe just needs light body work and maybe mechanical work (engine brakes clutch). But try to find an original car that somebody like myself hasn't turned into a race-car. If you visit Bugformance again, talk to Steve or Will and tell them Jim R. with the old blue 12-sec '67 sent you (the IMC guy).

Good luck in your quest.....you should hook up with the Golden Gate Chapter of the Vintage Volkswagen club, lots of advice can be found.
