in 2003, about a month after getting my STi, i had to go to portland for a conference.

i heard all the stories about their gas jockeys, but didnt believe it until i actually crossed the border.

first words i say to them is "92... period..."

it's a weird feeling.

they should have a sign right at the border telling you that... lol...

Put a sticker on your filler cap in bright neon "91 OCTANE OR HIGHER, ONLY". That's sucha good idea, I'm gonna do it myself.

of course... they'd have to know how to read.

If I remember correctly, the gas cap says "Premium Fuel Only"

But hell... if the hippo can't tell the difference between "92" and "87", there's no way she'll decypher the oh so complicated "Premium Fuel Only" on the gas cap!

I just drove through Oregon on my way to Seattle and stopped at a 76 to get some gas. I was pleasantly surprised to see 92 at the pump, and less pleasantly surprised by the large lady who came out and insisted on pumping my gas for me (no self service apparantly). So I handed her my credit card and told her to fill it up with Premium. Meanwhile I popped the hood, checked my oil, then went to buy a drink. As I come back, she hands me the reciept and tells me to have a nice night. I glance at the reciepts and notice that the fill-up is cheaper than it should be. Then look at the pump and see that she had given me a full tank of 87 octane ****! Considering my previous frustration with not being able to pump my own gas, and now this in-bred hippo failing to perform her oh-so complicated job of hitting the button (one of three!) that I tell her to hit, I understandably started getting a bit upset. I call her back to the pump and ask tell her I asked for 92... she says
"yea... I heard you"
"so why did you fill it up with 87??"
"uhh... yea... uhhh"
Then she gets her ZZ-top looking husband to whom I explain the situation and explain that my car will be in danger of serious damage running this gas. He scratches his head for a while and says, "I'll just put some octane booster in thar, that'll fix it." I'm getting more and more angry with every minute as I had not heard a single apology yet and the attendants are getting more and more rude. I told him to void the charge and keep his octane booster... should have had him syphon the gas out, but it didn't seem like he would have been too keen on that.

Luckily I brought a can of torco just in case something stupid like this happened. I poured in the can of torco, and as a precaution, got my laptop out and quickly whipped up a low boost/low octane map, flashed the ECU and went on my way cursing the place for the next 20-30 miles. The engine is doing fine so far. I'm staying away from WOT untill I run this tank to as close to empty as possible and fill up with some decent gas. I don't even want to think what may have happened if I hadn't noticed what she put in my tank!

Moral of the story: if someone else is filling up your tank, stand there and watch their every move!

It's illegal to pump your own gas in Oregon. It's a bogus law designed to "create jobs".

Why didn't you just use the octane booster?

That happened to a friend of mine once, with his Porsche turbo in Eugene. He added some octane booster and everything was fine; no knocking.

At any rate, isn't the ECU smart enough to sense hotter/lower octane fuel and adjust some things? I'd be really surprised if it didn't.

Since I live in Washington and go to school in Santa Clara, I've made the drive across OR many times. Oh, how I wish I could make it the whole way through the state without needing gas!!!!

You would think that these people would be BETTER at pumping gas than you or I, seeing as how they do it for a freaking living. But no. I have argued with many and had my tank over-filled at least four times (gas pours out inside the fenderwell from the overflow thingie).

Last time I was watching the guy, who was like 50-years-old, as he pumped. It stopped and he topped it off until it stopped again. He went to pump more in there and I said, "that's probably good." He says, "better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it! Har..." ....pumps... gas pours out onto the rear tire. I look at him with, I'm sure, a totally blank and dumbfounded expression. He says, "Yeah. Maybe it had enough already."

Yeah. Maybe so.

The best time was at this one station in the middle of freaking nowhere, where the 60+ year-old guy at the station (only person there. No-name station) just let me fill it myself since he was too lazy or busy doing something else. That's fine with me. Wonderful. Anyway it's pumping away and I'm just standing there looking at the trees and whatnot. I notice that it's a damn fast pump. Don't think I've ever seen a gas pump pump that quickly, actually. So anyway, it flies past 12 gallons then past 13. I had like 1/8th of a tank on the gauge and I didn't think it would take more than 12.5 gallons. Right as I'm thinking, "hmmmmmm," gas SHOOTS out from around the pump handle. I mean it's freaking POURING out all over the place!!! I jump over there and, from a far reach so I didn't get sprayed, pop the handle so it turns off. It pumped like 16 gallons...

The guy comes running over and starts swearing at me. I yell right back at him "your POS old-*** pump didn't shut itself off!!!" He's all confused and says, "of course it didn't. Pumps don't shut themselves off! You've gotta watch it." I'm even more confused and I'm like, "what? what pumps don't shut themselves off? I've filled at literally hundreds of different stations and have never seen or even heard of a pump that didn't automatically stop when the tank was full...." The guy's irate, but not as irate as me. He demands that I pay for the gas that second. I tell him that I'll consider it AFTER he gives me a hose to wash the rear corner of my car off ...

Oh man. Sure, it creates low-income jobs. But come on! I'm happy to pump my own gas.

If he's running a Utec, it overrides the ECU and there is no knock correction. The ECU is capable of adjusting timing accordingly if you are stock or EcuTek or whatever, but not Utec. However, I would think a full bottle of Torco is enough to effectively bump 87 up to the equivalent of 91... and if you're not driving WOT anyway, there's no point in changing the map unless you've actually modified your normal driving maps to the ragged edge of the timing envelope... if it knocked under normal driving due to this fuel thing, you're tuned very, very, very aggressively

what you do is just pump your own damn gas whilst in Oregon, then when the toothless come out to argue, you just pull the pump out, aim it at them, and then suggest that they resolve this matter with a "friendly gasoline fight"

I didn't want to use their random crap octane booster that does nothing when I brought a bottle of torco just for some stupid occasion like this.

I'm not running a UTEC, but rather an Ecutek reflash. I agree that I would have probably been just fine driving on my normal map especially with the torco in there, but since I had the laptop in my back seat, I decided to take the precaution to make sure I wouldn't cause any damage. It was most likely over-kill, but it wasn't a big hassle to do, so I figured better safe than sorry
