I just drove through Oregon on my way to Seattle and stopped at a 76 to get some gas. I was pleasantly surprised to see 92 at the pump, and less pleasantly surprised by the large lady who came out and insisted on pumping my gas for me (no self service apparantly). So I handed her my credit card and told her to fill it up with Premium. Meanwhile I popped the hood, checked my oil, then went to buy a drink. As I come back, she hands me the reciept and tells me to have a nice night. I glance at the reciepts and notice that the fill-up is cheaper than it should be. Then look at the pump and see that she had given me a full tank of 87 octane ****! Considering my previous frustration with not being able to pump my own gas, and now this in-bred hippo failing to perform her oh-so complicated job of hitting the button (one of three!) that I tell her to hit, I understandably started getting a bit upset. I call her back to the pump and ask tell her I asked for 92... she says
"yea... I heard you"
"so why did you fill it up with 87??"
"uhh... yea... uhhh"
Then she gets her ZZ-top looking husband to whom I explain the situation and explain that my car will be in danger of serious damage running this gas. He scratches his head for a while and says, "I'll just put some octane booster in thar, that'll fix it." I'm getting more and more angry with every minute as I had not heard a single apology yet and the attendants are getting more and more rude. I told him to void the charge and keep his octane booster... should have had him syphon the gas out, but it didn't seem like he would have been too keen on that.
Luckily I brought a can of torco just in case something stupid like this happened. I poured in the can of torco, and as a precaution, got my laptop out and quickly whipped up a low boost/low octane map, flashed the ECU and went on my way cursing the place for the next 20-30 miles. The engine is doing fine so far. I'm staying away from WOT untill I run this tank to as close to empty as possible and fill up with some decent gas. I don't even want to think what may have happened if I hadn't noticed what she put in my tank!
Moral of the story: if someone else is filling up your tank, stand there and watch their every move!

this almost happened to me as well at a gas station in klamath falls OR.
The guy even argued with me that my car didn't need 92 octane and that it would be fine.
Stupid people in Oregon. hehehe, j/k. :x

Hey man, I like ZZ top, why you gotta bring them into this?

Seriously though, its a shame that they didn't apologize. How was the price per gallon compared with what we pay here? I know it is typically a little cheaper, but I imagine that the forced full service might add a little to the price unless it is subsidized by the state.

.The gas prices are just barely cheaper but you're supposed to tip the attendant for filling it up (didn't happen this time of course!).

damn dude....sorry to hear about your experience...thats crappy! I feel your frustration though....I had a similar experience, but not quite as bad as yours....
I was driving up to Portland, (in my truck, which also requires premium) same crap...I jump outta the truck and start to pump gas....and the attendant runs over, and tells me that I am not allowed to pump my own gas! I'm like WTF? ok...so he takes over, I go inside to buy a drink...come out, he hands me the reciept, and I notice that the ground is all wet below my filler spout.....I take a closer look and notice that this jackass just spilled like 1/2 a gallon of gas all over the side of my truck (atleast it was the correct octane)! I was friggin furious....gas on paint = baaaad mkay
So I made them hook up a hose for me to wash the side of my truck off....it all turned out ok in the end....but still....I couldnt stop thinking WTF is wrong with these morons?!
-Ted
Glad it all turned out ok for you though!

I think there are certain stations that are self service as I saw a couple of signs stating something like that when I came back from picking up the L in Seattle.
I got yelled at for getting out and grabbing a pump which to me I thought was weird, I let this chick pump the gas walked in and bought some more red bulls paid the fuel fee and jumped in the car and took off, now I know why that chick was waiting for me at my car didn't realize I was meant to tip her.... oops..

it's law in oregon that the attendants fill your tank. something about creating jobs for the window lickers...
i filled up about 3 times total passing through oregon last summer. they did give me 92 every time, but never clicked the gas cap enough times. i'm sooooo glad i had my laptop with me to check and clear that damn cel.

slight thread jack...but related
I was surprised to find a full service 76 on 19th ave. The kid asked me what kind of gas I wanted in the car. I said "thanks, I'm pumping this myself"...he kinda just stood there. I guess the older/lazier folks go there. All the other cars knew the drill except me.
