does your budget include cost of the car and all the things you would want to fix? Any used car around that price is by far not a sweet 16 year old virgin.

Without a doubt for a daily driver, NOT the 510 - old cars just don't do well as DD's
Honestly within those choices, I'd go with whatever had the lowest mileage

Seriously.

The only kicker is that he has another vehicle. So if this one breaks down he has another car to drive... and he's calling it a part time toy.

But I do agree.

I daily drove my 53 caddy for a minute. It's fun waking up early so you can go open the hood, prime the carb, fire the car up, warm it up, etc. LOL. Hopefully with the rebuild I won't have to prime the damn carb every time I want to drive it.

If you're thinking about a daily/toy car... meaning a fun car that runs on regular gas and gets better mileage than your suby...

I wouldn't get an e30 unless you came up on a granny car with low miles for mad cheap. Repairs are not cheap.

I wouldn't get the vw unless you're a vw head... and if you're a vw head I'd get a square back or something like that.

I wouldn't get the 510 unless it's got a freshly rebuilt L20 or low mileage KA/SR swap in it that's been done right... repairs are cheaper and plentiful.

The RS is gonna be your best bet but it doesn't get that great of mileage and for a clean lower mileage one you're gonna pay... a lot.

So... my suggestion... decide if this is a toy or a commuter. If it's a commuter find the best gas mileage lowest miles car for the money. Honda. Toyota. Whatever.

If it's a toy... buy what you're in to.

On your list I'd probably buy the 510 and try to find one that's already been swapped an caged. LOL.

I've owned a S1 Scirocco, which is a slightly wider Mk1, and an E30. A wise man once told me there's nothing more expensive than a cheap BMW. I am inclined to agree. People love E30s though. I can see why. Dynamics are engaging, and a very solid mix of comfort and performance. Most cali E30s, hell most E30s I see are DDs, but good luck finding a cheap low mileage one. Also, most BMWs of this age (and the E36) suffer from electrical problems. Apparently, the harness is biodegradable, or at least some of the wraps are. Tracing bad wiring while the harness is still in the car sucks dick cheese.

I still think about my S1 all the time too If your commute is under 20 miles or you're cruising 45ish on local roads, I'd go with the VW all day. That 8V is one stout motor and parts are stupid cheap. But at the end of the day, if it's a DD and not a hooning vehicle, I agree with others and would go with the lowest mileage, best maintain, probably most expensive car you can afford.

Just to clarify, you're not talking about an E30 M3, are you? Cheap versions of those are still $10k, and cherry versions are $20k or more.

But that would be a tough choice for me.
E30- two or four doors are great. 318s are nice but I'd probly have to go with a 325. But they all have such high mileage. However, they do seem pretty bulletproof, they keep on trucking, like any old Toyota pickup. And they can look great. Lindberg from Speedhunters has a great four door.

RS- being that I already have a GD I am not as enticed, but they do look great. Probably more inexpensive to maintain than the E30, but maybe a bit harder to find parts for. Id be tempted to do a later model powertrain swap, which leads me to:

510: I've loved these for a while. With a period correct and un-rebuilt version, it wouldn't be the most reliable or safe simply because of the age. But with modern suspension, brakes and drivetrain, you'd be off to a good start. Of course that would require some extra cash. And time and effort.

Golf: I am seriously considering a MK3 VR6 now. Always wanted a quick Vdub. A little harder to find than MKIVs however, and VWs are a bit more expensive to own and maintain. It comes with being German. I can attest, I had an E36 M3 for a while. And they are sort of old, even with a 1999. That doesn't mean one can't be reliable though.

It all depends on what you are into. And what is or can be your style. I would consider myself lucky to own any of these.

^A smarter choice than all 3 of the OP's options for a DD. Can't go wrong with an EG Civic.
