Question Oh "Grounding Mod ", what art thou?

What is "the grounding mod"?

My car is an 02 WRX sedan that was previously owned by another i-clubber. It has three or four extra leads going from the negative battery terminal to various other parts of the engine compartment. Somebody put some effort into it.

Now Subaru Santa Cruz wants to take it all off. They think that the extra wires crowded the wiring harness angainst the battery tie-down, leading to fraying and the electrical fire I had a couple months ago. Furthermore, they say that it serves no purpose.

SOMEBODY thinks otherwise, or they wouldn't have put it on...so... My searches have lead me to a reference to "the grounding mod", but no description of WHY someone would do it.

Chris, if you're out there, or anyone else that knows; what is the multi-point grounding scheme all about?

one of the reasons why the grounding mod was done was that it eliminated the hesitation that the early WRX had. When I did mine (just one wire) it did help.

Not sure if this was fixed for newer WRXs.

Although do it wrong, apparently, like the former owner in this case did, and fixing things after the engine fire will cost you a whole lot more!

Basically it's been said...some people have weird hesitations/flatspots, and some report that a more robust grounding setup clears it up. This was when the WRX first came out...I think I remember some documentation that voltage gauges would stabilize and hesitations would go away.

I would do anything SCS says so they will fix it.
