The Official Fitness Thread

I'm sure a bunch of us made a decision to lose weight or get in shape this year. This thread is for anyone to share how they are achieving their fitness goals.

All types of disciplines are welcome; gym rats, runners, P90Xers, crossfitters, swimmers, martial arts, Wii Fit?, military style PT, whatever.....

Anyone looking to get into shape is encouraged to ask questions and all seasoned fitness gurus feel free to share your tips and advise.

We're gonna make America skinny again, one post at a time!

I'll kick start this to get it moving.

I just completed the original Power 90 dvds (6 workouts a week for 90 days). I lost 13lbs on this program and improved my strength and cardio endurance. I really recommend this program for anyone who's in poor shape and wants to get the ball rolling.

Today was my first day of the P90X program. So far so good. I plan on dropping at least another 10lbs over the next 90 days and increasing my strength and cardio much further.

What say you BAIC?

this year has been good so far, ive been going to the gym. i also have the p90x, but holy s*** dude, i gotta be in shape to even attempt that program. my biggest thing is knowing how to eat right. i want to drop 17-20 pounds, i have a bad back that constantly keeps me from doing my workouts. so i'll keep going and hopefully all goes well, and i get the results i want.

A healthy diet is a lot simpler and easier than people make it out to be. I didn't follow any of the Power 90 diet and I don't intend on following the P90X diet plan either.

I admit my diet is far from perfect, but it's also very sustainable and I feel that I can continue eating this way for the rest of my life. Here are some guidelines that I try to follow as best as I can:

1) Eat at least 5 meals a day (6 or 7 is even better)
2) Eat in moderation. Never eat until you are "full" or stuff", eat until you are no longer hungry.
3) Stick with fresh produce (fruits & veggies) and lean meats (pork, free range chicken, and very lean beef).
4) Don't eat after 8pm (unless you workout very late, it's a good way to pack on the pounds)

I have a bunch of other guidelines I try and go by, but those are the 3 majors that I try to never stray from. Eating several small meals a day is absolutely essential to losing fat and keeping it off. Eating small portions will also prevent you from wanting to "gorge" later on at a holiday meal or whatever. And eating more plants than meat will keep you consuming the good nutrients and minimizing the bad.

Then there's the whole world of supplements/vitamins and protein shakes. I don't know nearly enough to comment on this subject, but I have picked out my own set of supplement and recovery shake that I used for Power 90/P90X. It seems to work, but this is hardly a scientific conclusions as to it's overall effectiveness.

lost 10 pounds already in 2 weeks. but building muscle at the same time

eating oatmeal everyday for breakfast.. lunch and dinner depends.. chicken breast, turkey, tuna w/e if i want ill slap on 100% whole wheat bread

taking snacks in between meals so im eating about 6 "meals" a day.. workout everyday after lunch and usually a protein shake before and after workouts..

im barely doing cardio.. and if i do cardio this is only 5 mins on the stationary bike as my warmup before i workout to get the blood running through my body

i just want my 6 pack back my goal is in 2 months.

btw starving yourself is not doing your body any good.. when you starve yourself, it actually eats your muscle tissues and builds more fat. (so when you think youre actually losing weight, you are losing muscle weight, not fat)

drinking water constantly (20 oz) per meal is a must.. when you are dehydrated your body wouldnt destroy fat as well.. and could actually increase body fat

just my 0.02

yep water is super important i drink ~1 gal a day and how you feel and look is more important than how much you weigh since weight is very deceptive and doesn't really show how fit you are.

That can be good for your weight loss in the short term. Do you have a long term solution to keep the weight off?

i get into gym about 5 days a week and really try to watch what eat.
if your really lookin to shed weight cancel out all dairy and watch your carb intake.
always eat breakfast the most important meal if your trying to shed the lbs.

if you're at a place in life where you can:

a) slice out time for a training regimen
b) fundraise some $$ by throwing a party, using corporate sponsorships, etc.

Then I'd highly recommend looking into Team in Training. There is a ton of hype out there and many people get turned off when they hear they have to raise money for cancer research, but this program helped me significantly. For example...

I joined the team in training cycling team (road biking) in July 2009, weighed 265lbs and was 26 yrs old.

I stuck with the training program which was easy after the first few weeks. I had a bunch of local people I could ride/train with before work, after work and on the weekends. I got real and trustworthy advice on diet, cross-training, etc. and used it all in my daily life.

At the end of the training (Nov. 2009), I cycled 100 miles down in Solvang with my team. I was down to 224 lbs and was the strongest I've felt since high school.

For me, it was exactly what I needed to make a lifestyle change...not just to loose weight. If you're in it for a healthy body and mind, you'll love the program. Since November, I've kept the weight off, continue to cycle recreationally each week, and am getting involved this spring with the cycle team.

Let me know if you're interested in this program...I'm a mentor for the sprint cycle team and NO, I don't get anything for recruitment (other than a possible new cycling buddy).

I was doing pretty good for a while there. I was down about 20 pounds but in the last month I've got most of it all back.

Bah.

I will say this... p90x is ligit. But I would not try it unless you are already pretty fit.

I started out at 265. Got down to 247. Now I'm at 252. My goal is 220 this year.

I haven't weighed 220 since I was about 22 years old. 200 is about as light as I can get with my frame and muscle but one day maybe I'll get down under it. Right now I'd really just like to see 215-225.
