seriously, i wanted to complete my 50 caliber collection.

i saw that S&W had this emergency kit. inside a bright orange pelican case is the snubbie 500 with a few silly things like a handheld saw, a rescue mirror, etc.
in Juneau we used to do "bear loads" in the shotgun...
  1. 2 slugs to try to get through the chest and stop the heart
  2. 2 bird loads... cause if you havent stopped the heart or scared it off you might as well try to blind the mother****er
  3. 1 flare. bears have very oily fur, its flamable... and if you havent stopped its heart or blinded it you might as well try to set it on fire because youre pretty much ****ed.

Careful with staggered rounds in your shotgun, because every situation is different, and by staggering your shotgun loads you're setting yourself up for a certain situation. I'd rather load up the shotgun with all slugs because I know that a slug will f' up a bear, and if you miss the first two times, you're stuck with bird shot (which does nothing), and a flare (which will also do nothing). You're better off loading it full with magnum slugs so you can keep shooting, because the slugs WILL take down the bear, if the first two don't, the third will. My defense shotty holds 9 shells, (+1), which means that I have 10 slugs to shoot at a bear to get it off my back... If you can't take a bear down with 10 slugs, then you shouldn't be using a firearm because you obviously don't know how to shoot it.

Birdshot will do nothing to a bear unless you hit a VERY specific soft spot on it's head from close range... And a flare isn't going to do a DAMN thing. I know you think it will catch the bear on fire, but even if it does, the bear will keep charging and eat you before the fire even starts to bother him. If you've ever shot a flare, you'll know that they don't stick to things, they bounce off... The bear would have to be covered in GAS in order for it to catch on fire like you're thinking.

Me thinks there is too much hollywood influence that is tainting people's vision of real life defense situations.

Or, if you're going to risk doing so, at least use a more durable gun, i.e. a single-action Ruger .44mag.
