44mag is NO JOKE. People don't think 44mag is really a big deal because it's smaller than a .45 (in diameter), but the load behind it is soooooooo much bigger! I remember shooting a snub nose .44mag revolver, and damn, my wrist and ears were TOAST after about 10 rounds. Another round not to f' with is .500S&W magnum... I had the displeasure of shooting a 5" .500S&W revolver a couple of years ago... My wrist was so worn out after 8 rounds that I didn't want to shoot anything else for the rest of the day! In case you don't know what a .500S&W looks like, here it is next to a 9mm round.





For me to not want to shoot something because of recoil is RARE since I'm a recoil junky (what we're referred to in the gun world). I love recoil, I LOVE IT! Normally I will shoot anything under the sun, but there comes a point where something is no longer fun to shoot, and that is a 5" revolver with no type of muzzle brake that is chambered in .500S&W. I know it's fun to brag about the fact that you have a BIG *** revolver, but what fun is it when you no longer have fun shooting it? Not only is it harsh as hell, but it's like $5 a bullet! I guess it's cool knowing that you can tear a limb off with a single shot...

I have a friend who works for a major gun shop in Iowa and he says that there's been MULTIPLE occasions where someone comes into the shop and returns/sells their .500 revolver with only a couple of shots fired through it, They buy it without having ever fired such a violent round, take it to the range and realize how insane of a round it is, and promptly go back to the gun shop and return it. So I guess it's pretty easy to find a used .500S&W revolver in almost PERFECT condition, lol.

 

PS: Here's a video of a VERY bad idea for a gun... A snub nose .500S&W. Not only is the recoil BRUTAL, but the sound of the round going off is felt through your entire body... Like an M-1000 going off in front of your face. 8 rounds of that and your wrist becomes jelly.

I worked for an amo reloading company up here in the sticks and saw test loads for the 500 S&W. Dude... Its a hand cannon.

 

I'm not a fan of reloading... I don't trust it one bit, but I'm also VERY paranoid about stuff like that. I'm paranoid about shooting reloaded 9mm, let alone reloaded .500S&W MISSILES!

Even when following instructions EXACTLY to the last letter, I still don't feel comfortable with reloading ammo. I'm particularly uncomfortable with large rifle rounds, like .338 Lapua, .300 WINMAG (my fav round ever), .308, and .50BMG... Not only are the rifles that shoot those rounds usually expensive as hell (it would suck to have a round blow up and ruin your rifle), but the amount of powder and pressure with those type of rounds make it pretty friggin dangerous. With my luck and history of past injuries, I'll stick with buying ammo from reputable companies rather than doing it myself.

i have a 2.75" barelled .500 S&W.

first time out. i only got to shoot 4 rounds. i dont know what hurt more. my hand and wrist or my wallet...

WHY ON EARTH would you buy such a gun!??!? Seriously, why would you buy a 2.75" .500?!?!? Why not at LEAST have a 5", which is still REALLY short... What good is having a 2.75" barrel in such a large caliber!? That makes ZERO sense to me, and the only reason that gun exists is for novelty. Its useless unless you want to kill a bear in a phone booth.

seriously, i wanted to complete my 50 caliber collection.

i saw that S&W had this emergency kit. inside a bright orange pelican case is the snubbie 500 with a few silly things like a handheld saw, a rescue mirror, etc.

i had been eyeing it for a while. next thing i knew it was no longer on S&W's website.

you know what that means.

it took me a while to find a vendor that still had it and wasnt gonna rape me on the price.
