Non-Subaru Engine and tranny question.
I had a vision of a disgusting car last night, and I now have a vision of my project car when I finish school next month. I don't want to give away the car yet, but I need help with the drivetrain I want to use.
The Ultima GT-R kit car uses an LS1/LS6 engine and a Porshe Transaxle. I need more information on how they make the two work together. Like part numbers and such. Links would be great. The LS engine is the easy part of my equation. The tranny is confusing me because despite my google'ing, I can't find any good info.
Pic's, links, part numbers, stuff like that. I belive the Porsche trans-axle is a G50(?). Basiclly I want to know how to build a drivetrain that has an LS1 and a Porche 6-speed transaxle like Ultima does. I belive Mosler does the same thing with it's super car.

Mosler does use the same set up (specifically the LS6) but I know for sure that they have to make custom machined propriatery parts to mate the transaxle to the motor, so there are no "part numbers" that I know of. I also know that when they go to horsepower numbers beyond the 450hp, as their supercharged model creates, they ditch the porsche model transaxle becasue it is too weak. SO you may want to keep that in mind. I honestly think that in order to mate the LS model motor to any prosche trnsaxle you will have to find a machine shop with a CNC machine to mill you some custom parts/adapter plates. Good luck though!

p.s. You may want to PM LowBall as I know his shop has installed a crate 350 (non-LS) into the back of what looks like a 70's era Porsche Turbo, and I imagine that they retained a porsche transaxle. But I'd assume it's not the same modern transaxle that the Mosler/Ultima use but more likely an old 4or5-speed model.
p.p.s. The Upgraded tranny is a Hewland tranny and comes in the Mosler MT900 Proton model. If you go to the Mosler website (www.moslerauto.com) they have a list of parts you can buy.

Well, I'm shooting for around 400-500ish hp out of an LS1. I'll check out the Mosler site. Thanks.
EDIT: Actaully I found this on the Ultima site.
http://www.ultimacars.com/fra_pricing_ordering.htm
They mention what there kit comes with that makes the two work, but not an option to buy the parts I would need seperate.
Also, it says the've tested the G50 to hold around 600hp, so thats nice.

It would probably be easier to get the Borg-Warner 6-speed transaxle from a stock C5/C6 corvette, as it can handle a lot of power and it's WAY cheaper than a Porsche product. Plus it's made to mate to the LS1/LS6 and there's lots of parts and knowledge available...well, that is if you're mounting the engine in the front. If you're mounting it in the rear like on a Porsche 911, I guess it's not an option. Let us know more of the secret and we can help

As soon as I know a little more about my project I will. I don't want to look like a complete 'tard by saying what I want to do and then no-one understands the glory of my brilliance. For now though, yes it is a engine-in-the-trunk setup. Not sure if my donor car is mid-ship, or rear engine. Oh well.
EDIT: Oh yeah, originally I was going to build an LS1/T56 powered Datsun 280z. I used to own a 260z with a 383 stroker mated too a TH350. Unfortunantly I never had the time or the funds to build the chassis and suspension so I never got traction on it. I used it as a daily driver for some time, but I could never floor it. I always said I would go back and do it right, and I still will. For that project I had planned on using a complete z06 drivetrain with a C4 rear suspension. But for now I have something even better in mind.

an LS1/2/6 powered Zcar would be a very worthwhile project, lots of potential there. my neighbor just sold his 914 porsche with a chevy crate engine in the back. he said it was his life's work, but it just took too much time for upkeep, not reliable.

LS1 280z's have insane potential. I want to try my hand at something else though. I'll go back and build one eventually. That's actaully an easy swap to do. Just check out HybridZ's Cevy forum. http://hybridz.org/nuke/modules.php?...2ee7d7923bd946

I know a bit about these cars, and probably the most knowledgeable guy in the country about Ultima's is in Morgan Hill
