Thats a big misconception. Guinness is actually one of the lightest beers you can buy (in density not color)
That is why it sits on the top of a black and tan. The tan is more dense.
And I have a sickness with Guinness I can drink 12+ Guinness while watching basketball, football, or baseball.

Several micro and craft breweries are going towards cans. With special linings that have been developed they're an ideal container and keep the beer fresher longer. There are some good beers that come in cans these days.
I love Newcastle, but have never seen it in a can. If you notice a difference it might just be because the beer tastes fresher than from a bottle. Light affects beer immediately. Darker bottles filter out some of the UV which is why many bottlers use smoked or green glass. Smoked being the best choice. My general rule is to stay away from beers in clear glass (Corona - I rest my case), but Newcastle will get the exception every time. It's like crack.
MAGIC HAT #9!!
We need that. I love it. I hate fruit beers, but that stuff is... grand.

Magic Hat brews, Mehana (Hilo, HI) Pale Ale, some "local only" Deschutes brews like their HopHenge etc etc etc.
People would stop by and get into the fridge, grab like the last #9.
"PUT THAT BACK. NOW."
I am recovering from pretty much my favorite SF beer - Magnolia's ProvingGround IPA. SOOO GOOD. "Once it hits the lips..."
If you have not tried it, get yourself over to Haight/Masonic STAT and get some. They also serve it in true 20oz pints.
