New use for Cupertino Steve's old 02 WRX Seats.....
So I really like the seats in my WRX. Sized "just right" for me, supportive, and look good. Figured they'd be about perfect for my 96 Impala SS that is, ummm, "not even close to being stock"
.
So when I saw that Cupertino Steve locally was selling a set at a good price, I decided to get them from him and experiment.
An couple of afternoons of metal fabrication and welding, they were in the car.
After that (once I knew they'd fit and work well.....and they do!) I went ahead and ordered new leather seat covers for them as well as for the rear seats (stock seats) in the Impala. Bought the covers from
http://www.leatherseats.com/
This weekend was seat covers install weekend. Man, that is some HARD work....labor intensive, and takes a long time! I have about 10 HOURS over the last 3 days in recovering seats!
But, came out really dang nice if I do say so myself! Links below to the pics.....the OEM SS seats were all a "Medium Grey" color, similar to the middles of the new seat covers.
Let me know what you think!
Here are links to the pics
I'll probably take one of my WRX headrest covers (which have "WRX" embroidered in them) to the next car show so folks can figure it out
Oh yeah, was interesting to see just how VERY different the seat bottoms are on the driver's and passenger's WRX seats. Despite LOOKING similar from up top, they are constructed entirely different (to the point that the lower covers are NOT interchangable) underneath. Looks like 2 different engineering teams designed the 2 seats!

Very Sweet! Is that a camera mount on the passenger headrest mounts? Nice!

Yeah, it's a camcorder mount. It was drilled with 2 sets of holes to work in either car......now I just have to swap the headrest and I'm all set

Thanks!
While not cheap, it wasn't as expensive as you might think. It'd cost more to put a pair of Recaros into my WRX (in cloth!) than this entire project cost. Key is to sell off stuff to "finance" the mods (I got almost $500 for the old front seats and old rear seat covers!) and do the work yourself (which saves a ton of cash).

my homemade ones can hold a typical 8mm or mini DV cam.
remember, since it clamps onto the headrest, make sure to mount them as low as possible and if possible have someone sitting on that seat to prevent movement.
my cheap attempt:

too bad the STi seats dont have adjustable headrests. it now sits permanently on my 4runner -- great off road footage though...

I have a Panasonic MiniDV Camcorder on the mount. Works pretty well. Shakes a little, but (in the camera) image stabilization helps quite a bit. Also helps to have rubber tubing on the headrest posts, between the post and the mount.
No, the car isn't stock. In fact, if this weekend goes according to plan I will have more WHP (and more WTQ) than TWO stock WRXs put together by this time next week
