new router/network help-crap signal
i currently have a netgear N wireless router running pretty much everything. up stairs and approx 40feet away is my PS3. when i have it running the wifi connection for the laptop blows. ive given some thought to running cable through the walls, hard lining the ps3. before i do this, would i benefit from a better router?
when can i find a good deal on cable?

just run cables wireless is crap. Cat 6 Network Cables
and yes having a good router is a smart idea.

I wish I could just run wires all over the house and get away with it.
What I want to know is if this actually works as good as it says it does

How old is your router?
You might benefit from a software upgrade if its an older router.
N series will get you the best distance and fastest speeds (depending on what you should be receiving from you ISP). Generally the further and more walls the signal is traveling thru, the weaker it will be.
Do you have any security set up on the router (WEP, WPA, WPA2 ect)?
- We left our connection open when we would torrent a lot (we could say it was anyone using our network). But since have slowed down on the torrents. I noticed that my XBL connection was choppy. I locked our connection and my playing quality grew due to much fewer leaches off our connection

Have you looked into firmware upgrades. I run my Linksys N router on dd-wrt or something...

By no means am I an expert or anything, but I think it helps. I like the extra features it comes with also...

Run a powerline adapter like Jodice112 suggested. I have 4 Linksys routers and 3 powerline adapters all hooked up together throughout the entire house. Never had any problems with the setup whatsoever.
Did most of my house in Cat6 and I'm glad I did. Ethernet is just so much faster and with lower latency, for gaming that's a must.
It's really cheap too, just time consuming. Bought everything from monoprice.com and a few tools like a snake and a long drill bit.
