Driving 20 years - 2 speed tickets. The fines on both of those tickets don't add up to the cost of a decent detector.

Just gotta be aware, look ahead and watch your mirrors. Even with a Laser detector, if it goes off you're already busted.
i just dont see why people drive with them on their windsheild...when a cop passes you and sees it, its basically saying "im guilty"

isnt there a way to mount a sensor in your grill and run it to your glovebox?

if a cop sees suction cup marks on your window, he's not letting you go even tho you yanked it down when pulled over.

but yeah its definitely a good tool to have if you have the money and have common sense to know it wont save you 100% of the time, i dont have one, id like to have one tho.

Actually it is not, now a days my V1 will not chirp even if the cop is holding the gun right on the V1. I drove in front of a cop who was holding the gun so i can see if this piece is working or not. now i really don't know if the V1 is working or not.

i only get the KA warnings but those guns are so history.

It doesn't guarantee a ticket whatsoever...I've talked to a lot of cops about this and for the most part, many could care less about a radar detector. And a lot of the time it all comes down to your attitude while talking to the cop.

CHP also uses radar detectors for traffic control. They know the second they flip the switch on the gun,,,, Everyone with a detector is going to slow down. Its really kinda funny to watch.

But caltrans is also using radar for traffic flow.

I cannot believe this is another post arguing this issue. Yes, a lot of it comes down to attitude however this is over-ridden by the cop's attitude, whether he got laid last night, whether he likes/dislikes your ethnicity, etc.

There is no two ways about it, a radar detector spotted by a cop will mean only ONE thing to him - that you are a speeder and you have that to make speeding easier. How is that not obvious?

Not to add any more fuel to the fire, but it is obvious that an officer could think that. Then again, someone could use the case that seeing a radar detector might tell the officer that the driver may have a higher chance of fighting the ticket, meaning more hassle for the officer. No one has provided any hard evidence so it can go either way.

Don't get me wrong, I totally see your point of view, and I would generally agree. Though, it's not going to make me move my V1 from where it is.

even if 1/2 the cops could care less, there are another 1/2 that *WOULD* let you go, bbbbbut you had a radar detector in your window...sooo thats the tipping point and they write you a ticket

my radar detector is passing a CHP and getting off at the next exit, watching him pass by on the overpass : ))))))))

if youre a speed demon a detector isn't going to help you when they see you with your brakes on coming down from 20 over. If youre going 5-10 over you'll definitely have enough time to get your speed down.

that being said I haven't gotten a ticket since i got my detector, but I'm not saying that there is a correlation between the two. I do no drive like a madman, and on the freeway I don't even like to cruise too long about 70mph because of the RA gearing

Here's what I have been doing for 15 years to stay ticket free without a detector:

Use the cars in front as early warning. If there are brake lights applied even if it's a mile ahead, slow down.

Slow down just before any highway on-ramps, blind curves, and dips in the road.

Watch for any stationary lights parked on the highway median.

Try to have another car cover your behind as you speed.

The most difficult is to being able to identify police cars at night by looking only at the tailights and headlight pattern. This is hard to describe, but it feels like an instinct.

Don't speed alone.

this is exactly what i do...and the part to "slow down just before highway blind curves" is the one that got me this time around.

so, you know that the rest of the blind turns i take for a while are going to be ol' granny style!

another perk to driving like this? if you drive this aware, your chances at accidents and such goes way down too. good idea bud.

This is all great and usable advice. Using traffic as your guide is the most useful tool. Adding a good detector to the mix only helps as you have more info available to you.
