nice eq
so IYHO ( i am not TOO pickey, and dont mind long projects) is trying to make due with an 2006 a good idea? i am going to go nutzoid on the suspension right off the bat. so any "sti vs wrx" suspension comparos go out the door. i am way more concerned with what i can do with that motor. i would also get a 6sp eventually, probably after i blew the 5sp...
i need to make more money....

That being said, if you're planning on going with a 6 speed eventually and doing a lot of suspension and brake work, why not start with an STI? You will end up spending more money in the end trying to get the WRX to handle as well. Remember its not just the transmission... diffs, DCCD, brakes, extra bracing, better steering, etc. I had an 05 WRX wagon that I put a 2.5l in. It was a fun car but I realized the tranny was my limiting factor if I wanted any more real power out of it. I did the math and ended up selling the wagon and picking up an 06 STI. It really is worth the money for what you get.
Thanks

yes Ed, i my first choice is an STi. But my budget is limited, and finding a clean sti has proven difficult. i have been having the same trouble on the EVO side. some good prices, but owned by 8 and has 85k miles with tons of mods......
since i am probably going to have whatever i get for a LONG time, i really need to find something clean.....

LOL nice mgc....
i have had an sti and a wagon and a sedan and a swapped gc8. the sti still hands down was a better car. the gc swap was probably a close second, but the chassis flex killed me (i know i know how the hell can i tell, well i can..). the wagon ruled for rom and fam, but the handling was the worst of the bunch....
its the needle in the haystack i am looking for......

Keep looking for that one nice STI... its out there!
I know all about the GC8 chassis flex. I toss my friend's GC around the back roads on occasion and there's no denying the extreme flex compared to the GD and especially the STI. I'd only run a GC if I was putting a cage in it

Overall the power potential is very similar between the 06+ WRX and STI. The WRX does have a slightly milder cam that makes it drop power more so toward redline, but its not a huge difference. The main restriction in power is the small stock turbo.

Agreed 100%! I had an 06 WRX and I thought it was great, but I ended up wrapping it around a tree head on avoiding 3 deer... I got an 07 STi and I really couldn't be happier with it, just night and day over the WRX... Handles totally different and you get soooo much more.
Come on Josh, remember the days of Impreza-RS.com? What's the one thing we all wanted back in 99-2000? AN STi!!! Now you have the ability to get some of the best STi's in history, so why settle for a WRX when you can have an STi? (Not saying the WRX is bad or anything, it's much better then most cars out there, and the best in it's class by far, but the STi is in a different class all together)

i am looking for sti's. at the vehicle buget meeting last night it was agreed a lower milage, newer car is a better "investment" (<-we all know cars are liabilities, but not for me).
and it appears i will need to find one "tastefuly modded". the mod budget was cut big time, if not put on hold. soooo, off to find that needle in a haystack....

Being up at 6000ft+ makes a huge difference. Took a buddy of mine for a ride around Heavenly at over 7k and there is an enormous drop in power at that elevation. As long as you've got a solid 2.5 block, whether WRX or STi, you'll be able to make the power.
